I was thinking that was coming based solely on the whole "temporarily OOS due to new packaging" thing. so it goes...

As Blu releases are coming out of the films I love, I have been selling the DVDs on eBay (no exchange program for Aussies ) and upgrading. But as with The 400 Blows, I am stuck here. Much moreso than the Doinel box, I wish all films from Malle box were being upgraded so I could offload the DVDs and buy the Blu's, but I won't be buying just the sole release of this. Not keen on double dipping titles and keeping both formats - it's an expensive enough hobby as it stands...

Similar conundrum here, though The 400 Blows would be an easier decision if they would have included Antoine and Colette as they are doing with the Chaplin short here.

Criterion's exchange program seems to be the best option here. Just mail them the DVD with $20 and put the BD in the Malle box.

Criterion no longer offers the DVD to blu-ray exchange program.

Just finished the Au Revoir Les Enfants Blu: the film has always been the one Malle that I revisit the most often and whose impact remains undiminished upon repeat viewings whereas, say, Lift to the Scaffold didn't vow me as much when I went back to it. Anyhow, the upgrade isn't mindblowing but the finer grain, the superior blacks and more vibrant colours (Beaver's cap of the priest's robe is one good example) are immediately apparent. The image warrants a solid 8.

I used to be a fan of Murmur of the Heart, partly because I thought it was his most accomplished film outside of Atlantic City (and Zazie, which I hadn't seen until recently), but when I re-visited it a couple of times in recent years, it kind of felt manipulative. I'll admit it's still enjoyable on a superficial level, but in retrospect, I'm a bit wary of how they created a sentimental fantasy out of an unsavory reality.

According to Michael's Movie Mayhem; Criterion has discontinued the 3 Films by Louis Malle boxset.

Is that why Murmur of the Heart and Lacombe Lucien are available for single purchase? Have they ever made box-set exclusive titles standalones before?

They've always been available as single releases since the release of the set, just with no supplements other than a trailer in most cases. If you wanted the supplements you had to get the box set for the fourth disc.

They also broke up the Monterey Pop set (minus the outtakes on the DVD) and were in the process of breaking up the Cassavetes set but haven't released Opening Night or that documentary on its own yet.

So does this mean individual Murmur Of The Heart & Lacombe Lucien blu-ray upgrades are imminent? or that the titles will be permanently deleted? Since the 2 just came out on blu in Japan, I would like to think they'll just be getting individual upgrades (which is why I held out on buying the box).

Does anyone know when or who will be re-issuing Louis Malle titles in the UK on dvd or Blu Ray?

Studiocanal/Optimum Home Entertainment have just deleted all UK Louis Malle dvds and I have not been able to get a straight answer from the company as to what their plans are. First they said they owned the copyright, then not, gave me a number of contact in France who said they did not own copyright. See my blog post.

I just picked this up and just love the film, the transfer and everything about it. I don't know if this has been discussed or even if this is right area to ask, but the film is in excellent mono. But at the end of the original credits (at film's end), it says Dolby stereo. Since I used subtitles, the movie was in its original language. Even ImdB has Dolby listed.
