I'm kinda glad they're ominous, looking up the actual winners is just as pathetic as the awards ceremony itself

Didn't realize that West Side Story a comedic goldmine when I watched it:

That's the strange thing about lumping these two genres together; if a movie is sufficiently musical, it's relieved of the responsibility of being comedic and vice versa.

Man, if PTA is finally in position to win an Oscar and fucking Kenneth Branagh steals it from him...

I'm one of the people that didn't mind Belfast, but very happy that The Power of the Dog got the big prize instead. Also pleased with the Supporting prizes and the general love for West Side Story

would be right in step with 2021’s general vibe so

Now that those nominations are all announced, let me be the first to say that they are Not Good

Uh, did supposed-frontrunner Kristen Stewart really just get snubbed?

Not totally surprising, I've seen a lot of hate from regular audience members (i.e. not press or critics) for that movie in general.

But they made sure to get Jared Lego’s Super Mario Bros. impersonation in there

How is it not surprising? Unless I missed the memo the SAGs aren’t based on an audience rotten tomatometer- even those who loathe the film have been quick to praise Stewart’s perf, she’s well-liked and respected within the industry, and she’s playing beloved Princess Diana in a biopic of sorts. All green lights here..

Looks like they nominated for Most Acting instead of Best Acting.
I kind of can’t believe that Kristen Stewart is well-liked in the industry. She’s very vocal about how much she hates the popularity contest aspects of Hollywood and the playing of the publicity game required of actors. She seems much more of a director’s actor than an actor’s actor and that other actors would think she’s a bad sport.

Joaquin Phoenix has been very vocal about that as well, and unless everyone is blind or lying, many of his peers consider him one of the best with the utmost respect. I’ll retract any claim pretending to bridge the impossibility of knowing how others feel about these actors as chums, and stress (perhaps naively but optimistically) that I believe the respect for craft would translate into a nom, regardless of gripes about personal character

I know there wasn’t a ton of momentum behind his film, but I’d still argue Phoenix himself was snubbed as well

Do people resent her for springboarding her career with the Twilight films?

He was great, but for me the real travesty is that Gaby Hoffman will be snubbed throughout awards season for the exact kind of non-hammy supporting actress role that should but rarely wins the statue

So the new frontrunner is Nicole Kidman, right?
Also very surprised at the lack of noms for the two Belfast boys and Aunjanue Ellis, but totally cool with it. House of Gucci for ensemble is weird, especially over Power of the Dog and West Side Story

Also here are the BAFTA

My impression has always been that a lot of people simply think she sucks at acting. I don’t have strong feelings about her one way or the other, but there’s a lot of hostility to her out in the world and it would be weird if that didn’t carry over to her peers to some degree.

My hunch is that Nicole Kidman and Will Smith will win all the acting awards going forward because it pushes the “Hollywood is BACK!” narrative. Nicole is probably winning more for that AMC ad, and Will Smith is “owed” a career award. And of course, both are playing beloved real people.
