There are some comments here, and at other CF threads, (as well at Amazon reviews) regarding shoddy/overly obstructive subtitles in the Cohen La Belle Noiseuse and Jeanne la Pucelle.

By way of summary, are the subtitles a showstopper? The screen-caps I saw do exhibit some rather large fonts in the subtitles, but I cannot determine from that how annoying the viewing might be.

(Both editions are still available at Amazon.ca, btw.)

Come on guys, I'm still waiting 5 years later. 😂

I wonder if we (I?) might summarize the 10 Rivettes that Cohen released (or will release?), and perhaps review the good, bad, ugly of each? I know the main Rivette thread touches on these, but a Cohen summary here would be lovely.

The 10: (English Titles.)

*Love on the Ground (1984)
Wuthering Heights (1985)
*The Gang of Four (1988)
*The Beautiful Troublemaker (1991)
The Beautiful Troublemaker: Divertimento (1992)
**Joan the Maiden (2 films) (1994)
*Up, Down, Fragile (1995)
*Secret Defense (1998)
The Story of Marie and Julien (2003)

* = released on Cohen Blu Ray.

Before we (I?) go any further, have I missed anything or made any mistakes?

I was probably unaware of this thread when I made my original post, but here is a starting point:

~1:07:58 on the Blu-ray

After committing the murder, Sylvie sits down in an armchair and collapses. The camera pushes in. On the DVD, the tail end of this camera movement is accompanied by a fade to black, followed by the next scene of Sylvie lying in bed. On the Blu-ray, the fade to black is instead replaced with a cut to black.

~1:47:04 on the DVD
~1:51:22 on the Blu-ray

Walser kisses Ludivine's hands. On the DVD, the scene fades to black before a shot of Ludivine lying in bed the next morning. On the Blu-ray, the scenes are bridged by a straight cut.

~2:03:57 on the DVD

~2:20:48 on the DVD
~2:26:28 on the Blu-ray

Walser has left Sylvie's apartment after confessing. Sylvie chases him out onto the street but fails to catch him. On the DVD, there is a cut to black, followed by a fade-in to a shot of Sylvie in bed, unable to sleep. On the Blu-ray, there is a hard cut from the shot of Sylvie on the street to her in bed.

~2:43:56 on the DVD
~2:50:35 on the Blu-ray

Ludivine has shot Sylvie, who lies dying in Walser's arms. On the DVD, the camera pushes in on Walser as the scene fades to black, followed by a wide shot of the same scene. On the Blu-ray, there is no fade, simply a cut from close-up to long shot.

During the conversation that occurs at and around 1:48:44, the boom mic is visible over Laure Marsac's head:

I'm aiming to make this as comprehensive as possible, so any more specific examples for any of the films would be appreciated.

Oh! This is great, thanks. I overlooked it - in the main Rivette thread!

Dude...you basically answered nearly everything I was pondering. 😂 Thanks.

Sorry to say - but I'm mostly avoiding Cohen Rivette.

(The Radiance Jeanne is coming my way.)

The only one I was still looking at was La belle noiseuse, because I think I can live with burned subs, if they are not atrociously covering the screen, and this stated audio thing, which might be a very minor issue?

I will go looking for your thoughts on Up, Down, Fragile...

...It seems that the Cohen - Up, Down, Fragile disc came and went in April 2023 without much of a splash at the main thread - which might be good news? 😂

I'm surprised that since then, nothing has been announced regarding the remaining titles.

Edit: I wonder if TWBB was ultimately happy with the Cohen Blu of his fav Rivette?

It's peculiar that, despite owning nearly every Rivette film on DVD/Blu-ray (Radiance's Jeanne la Pucelle will complete the set), I've never gotten hold of a single Cohen release – I opted for the English-subtitled Potemkine releases of Up/Down/Fragile and Secret défense, their unsubtitled release of La belle noiseuse (depending on my Oppo player for that one!) and the Artificial Eye DVD of Divertimento, and have hung on to my old Bluebell DVDs of the '80s films. I could still consider upgrading Love on the Ground and Gang of Four, but the issues noted above don't fill me with much enthusiasm.

For me it's a case of desperately wanting to fill in the gaping holes in my emerging Rivette collection, and seeing what is out there now, in my Region. (A region-free player seems to be...complicated where I live.)

And also, do these Cohen issues still amount to "the 99% solution"? Can I live with these (small?) glitches? I get that many here won't, but hell...I just watched Time Regained on the Kino dvd. 😂
