Another week to catch up on short films! Very few submissions so far, so the list is looking very strange right now.

Shorts List update

Only a few days to go.

So far, only five lists have been submitted, and they're blindingly diverse. 220 different films have been nominated, with only 24 of them appearing on more than one list.

The aggregate list so far is rather impressive, however, with the top ten containing three obvious French classics (and another less obvious French classic), one of the most radical films ever made for television, two un-photographed films, one music video, one American avant-garde classic and one nightmarish animation.

The list is currently rather light on 'classic' studio animation and silent comedy, but it's great to see a list with so much experimental film on it. The directors with the most films nominated are Bruce Conner (9) and Stan Brakhage (8), but in each case only one of those films has so far attracted more than a single vote.

As usual, anybody who's already submitted their list can see the provisional Top 10 if they PM me.

Officially, 2 days to go on the shorts list, but I'll allow the weekend as well to get as many in as possible.

Seven lists in so far, with nearly 300 films nominated and only 40 of them getting on more than one list. At this rate, we should be able to get a respectable consensus Top 50, at least.

As expected with so few lists in, every submission creates new upheavals, but we've still got a diverse and intriguing top 10 - though it's currently half French. We even have a woman in the top ten. Is this a first for any of these lists? It's not Maya, and it's on the strength of only two extravagant votes, so this is sure to change almost immediately. The current top film is leading by a mile (and it's got twice as many votes as the film at number 3, so this is not likely to change).

63= Nocturne (Von Trier)
65. Nostalgia (Frampton)
66. The Secret of Wendell Samson (Kuchar)
67. Dottie Gets Spanked (Haynes)

The French developed their stranglehold on the top five early on (and both of the top two appeared on all but one list), but the rest was reasonably volatile, with Meshes and Window Water mounting a last minute dash to reach the top ten. Our last title, Dottie, scored a mighty four points. Special mention should go to The House is Black and Elephant (my own number 2 and 3 respectively), which got into the top twenty on the strength of only two, madly passionate, votes.

I suggest that particpants defend their darlings for this list in the "Shorts List and Discussion" thread rather than the regular "Darling Defending" thread, since there's already a good discussion going on there.

For a start, the following films all made individual top tens but failed to win a second vote:

Desperate Orphans

Birth of the Robot (Lye)
Le Chant du styrene (Resnais)
A Close Shave (Park)
Colloque des chiens (Ruiz)
Critical Mass (Frampton)
De l'origine du XXIieme siecle (Godard)
Desistfilm (Brakhage)
Les Dites cariatides (Varda)
Dove (Coe / Lover)
Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century (Jones)
Entr'acte (Clair)
Every Day Except Christmas (Anderson)
The Flat (Svankmajer)
GI Joe remixes (Fensler)
Hedgehog in the Fog (Norstein)
Intervals (Greenaway)
Labyrinth (Lenica)
The Man Who Planted Trees (Back)
The Music Box (Parrott)
O Dreamland (Anderson)
Opus 40 (Corbijn)
The Ossuary (Svankmajer)
Passage Through: A Ritual (Brakhage)
People on the Road (Karabasz)
Police Attack (Lynch)
Pull My Daisy (Frank / Leslie)
Rabbit Seasoning (Jones)
Ritual in Transfigured Time (Deren)
Scotch Hop (Maclaine)
The Stars Are Beautiful (Brakhage)
Statues Also Die (Resnais / Marker)
Trouble in the Image (O'Neill)
Wild Night in El Reno (Kuchar)

I think that's all of them.

I shouldn't complain, since I didn't vote, but how could "A Grand Day Out" make it so high and "A Close Shave" not make the list? I've only seen the former once, but I thought it was a bore. The latter, on the other hand, is nearly as masterful as "The Wrong Trousers." Also, where's "Rehearsal for Extinct Anatomies"? Have people simply not seen it? I mean, how could "Streets of Crocodiles" make top 10 but no sign of this greater film?

Also, zedz, if you have the time (maybe others can contribute), it would be great to know which of these are on home video (and on what release(s) each can be found).

I'll try, but it might take a while.

Rehearsals did get a single vote from me (but not as high as Street) and I agree with you on the relative merits of A Grand Day Out and A Close Shave (though only The Wrong Trousers made my list), but that's one of the hazards of a comparatively low turn-out project like this one. I'd have expected most of the films on the also-rans list above to have obtained second votes if another five or so lists had come in.

Well, I'm surprised at how many of these short films I know or at least am aware of.

As for the Wallace & Gromit question, The Wrong Trousers is clearly some sort of plasticine masterpiece. After that I favor A Grand Day Out slightly over A Close Shave. Shave is certainly accomplished but in my O adds too many characters and has too much going on, so that the relationship between W&G is undeveloped. It's all a little frenetic and plot driven, though the trademark wit and visual appeal are still on display.

A Grand Day Out has a somewhat patchy look, reflecting the length of time and effort in getting it made. But the simplicity of the idea is a good part of its charm, as the slower pace allows us to get to know the characters Wallace and Gromit. I'm always fascinated by the genesis of ideas and the first/early films which contain them, so there also is the historical interest in seeing the origins of W&G.

Plus, I like the way Grand Day sets the stage for The Wrong Trousers, and how Trousers builds upon it (beginning with the little spaceship bric a brac on the wall in the opening credits). Day Out is a gentle, whimsical introduction. Trousers is an elegant blend of character development and action. Shave on the other hand seems to be want to free itself from the short film structure, anticipating the feature, Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

Maybe that's a somewhat sentimental vote for A Grand Day Out ... but so be it.

The three remaining films are available from...er...um...grey market sources. PM me if you want more info on the Conner and Frampton. Bruce Conner's Report is also available on an ultra-rare DVD that was available during one of his exhibitions, 2002 B.C.: 8 16mm Films By Bruce Conner. You could only get the DVD if you gave a donation to one of three charities designated by Bruce Conner himself. Both Breakaway and Report were included on the DVD, but not A Movie. If you want to see A Movie, I can also send a link to where it's been posted on the Internet for classroom use. By the way, anybody have a wish list for avant garde shorts not on DVD yet that they'd like to see on the new Treasures from the American Film Archives set devoted to American avant-garde works? I have a connection where I might be able to get some info.

Oh yeah, most of the Re:Voir VHS tapes are available from the Center for Visual Music, although they typically want $40 for a VHS tape. According to the guy who founded Re:Voir, most avant-garde films in the genres of "visual music," "abstract animation," or "structural film" reproduce better on high-quality VHS than on DVD.

Three 60s lists compiled so far, and though I expect we'll eventually see the usual suspects rise to the top it's likely to be a very eclectic selection. There's minimal overlap so far. The three lists have included 130 different films. Nineteen countries are represented so far, which is several more than we had at the end of the 1950s vote, with nine times as many lists submitted.

Only two films have appeared on all three lists, and one of those is definitely a fluke. No US films feature in the initial top ten (though there are two by US-born directors). The three films I expected to be the monolithic popular favourites don't yet qualify for the list at all.

The initial number one is Italian, and the top ten's other Italian film is by the same director. A Japanese director (not Kurosawa) also appears twice, in slots 5 and 7, with a third Japanese film in second place. Third place is a Swedish / French tie, and there's also a Russian in the top ten. I'd wager that only two of the current top ten films stand a chance of still being there at the end of the process.

As ever, those who have already voted can PM me for the provisional top ten.

I couldn't find the rules, but I'll cobble something together-- I assume we're going ranked list of 50 titles with years according to their IMDB listing?

Yep. The inherited rules can be found in the second post way back on page one of this thread, but that's about it.

Six lists now in, and the top ten is completely different to what it was before the weekend. The current number one wasn't even in the running before, and two of the "Big Three" that were previously ineligible have bullied their way in there (one with a perfect average score). Japanese cinema is completely out (so long, Kobayashi, it was too good to last) and the Italians are completely in, and we've now got two US films (by the same director).

One week to go, and the latest flurry of activity has put yet another film at the top of the list. I suspect this one may be there for the long haul, as it's the only title to appear on every list submitted so far.

Only a couple of days left, so before you get dressed up as Anita Ekberg or Tsunagoro Rashomon for Halloween (or just for your own private enjoyment) don't forget to send me your top 50 films fo the 1960s.

The current top ten is half Italian. Numbers 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6 are all within a few votes of one another. Drastic vote-splitting has hampered the chances of Godard and Pasolini, but practically everything either of them did during the decade has received a nomination. I think the lower reaches of the list will be even more surprising than usual, if only for what's omitted.

Last call for 1960s lists. There's been a mini-flood of submissions recently that will take me some time to process, so I won't be posting the results for a day or two, and late entries are welcome until then.

Thanks to everyone who contributed. The usual suspects ended up on top, but the fight for the top spot was incredibly close. At the official end of voting (i.e. midnight on the 31st) only ten votes separated the top three, and they were in the reverse order. Ultimately, L'Avventura, which had been way out if front for most of the voting, ended up third.

There's a fascinating and extensive (almost as long as the official list) also-rans list on the way: another 98 films attracted two or more votes. I'll also compile director stats.

Darlings to be defended in the usual thread. I think my own list was almost all jilted bridesmaids this time, so compiling this list was a somewhat masochistic experience!

Director-wise, Godard was way out in front, but his votes were split over a whopping 15 films. Pasolini was the runner-up vote-splitting champion, with his 453 votes split nine ways. Even though he was among the top twenty directors in terms of total votes, only one of his films appeared on the final list. These were the ten most popular directors:

Godard 2077
Antonioni 1613
Bergman 1388
Fellini 1247
Kubrick 861
Kurosawa 754
Hitchcock and Bunuel 743 apiece (now that's a satisfying tie!)
Melville 709
Tarkovsky 647

Most of mine made it, as I expected. I had 8 in the also-rans list, and these which I guess no one else voted for:

A Time for Burning (Connell/Jersey)
Devi (Ray)
Kapurush (Ray)
Mahanagar (Ray)
Meghe Dhaka Tara (Ghatak)
Subarnarekha (Ghatak)
Teen Kanya (Ray)
The Americanization of Emily (Hiller)

Well, at least ONE Ray film made the cut.

apologies if this has been asked or addressed elsewhere, but are there plans - or has this thing already been actuated? - to make a forum-wide "all-time" list? If it exists, could someone point me in that direction. If it doesn't, why not?
