Something I thought might be of interest to those who read this thread: posters for classic movies on the TCM site. Most of them are at least a little bit naff, but some are quite nice - I get a kick out of the Jekyll and Hyde poster.

After looking at that "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" poster, I now know where Criterion got the idea for their "My Dinner with Andre" cover. Or maybe it's vice versa?

The font seems more suited for, say, a Peter Sellers movie.

It's an interesting font, though.
What's it called?
And did you manipulate it to get that shaved-off side of the H?

Indeed. Mixing uppercase with lowercase for a Kubrick joint is also a no-no.

I lifted the typeface from one of the original posters...

Here's a re-do using the style used in the main titles...

Well, the artist who did the original poster didn't have much sense picking out the font then. Though I believe it's actually hand-lettered. I'm not sure which is worse!

I think a sans-display font would work nicely. Serifs are too refined, especially with the screen you've chosen. That serif isn't Calluna, is it?

I liked the first cover too, especially the shot you've chosen - it has an authentic, grainy, period quality. You almost don't recognise Kirk Douglas.

Sans serif capital lettering seemed to be SK's preference. It suits the aesthetics of his films very well.

Agreed. Even his more "classical" works like PATHS have that Kubrickian aspect about them that blends better with a sans serif font, which tends to have a more modernist look.

Has anyone done a C cover for one of the films most deserving of the CC treatment: Saturday Night and Sunday Morning?

I have some other ideas for this one, but the most straightforward was, of course, the easiest to knock out. Wish I could've gotten the picture in color, and my laptop doesn't want to read the disc I burned of the recent IFC broadcast...
