Let's not forget that he actually appears in Trainspotting (which Criterion originally issued on LaserDisc) as himself (asking game-show-like questions regarding HIV infection!) during Renton's cold-turkey-induced nightmare sequence!
He was also in the video to Inbetweener by Britpoppers Sleeper.

Philip d'Antoni, producer of Bullitt and The French Connection and director of The Seven-Ups, who took early retirement in the mid-1970s after deciding that he'd probably hit his career peak already.

Interestingly, one of his last feature projects was Cruising back in the days when it was planned as Steven Spielberg's theatrical debut circa 1973/4. It fell through, but d'Antoni was so impressed with Spielberg that he recommended him to fellow producer Richard D. Zanuck - and the rest is history.

I'm very sorry to hear that, and I think that we might be some of the few defenders of Liebestraum as one of the best films of the 90s!

She's also great in one of her earliest roles in Permanent Record.

Died of organ failure, resulting from heart issues related to catching rheumatic fever when he was 12 years old. People with those issues are not expected to live past 60. That puts his death in a whole new light, considering both the tremendous physical shape he kept himself in and the accumulative damage done to his body (including a broken neck, in 1976) from over 30 years of wrestling.

Cyril Frankel, died 7 June 2017, aged 95 - but seemingly no obituaries before now.

His film Never Take Sweets from a Stranger was in Indicator's second Hammer box set, released last month.

British director Michael Anderson (The Dam Busters, Around the World in 80 Days, Logan's Run) who, like his almost exact contemporary Lewis Gilbert, only just missed his century.

Here's the Moviedrome introduction to Logan's Run by Mark Cousins (Logan's Run also got audio sampled in a nice way a couple of years back for The Look of Being Old)

I would quite like to see the shocking looking horror film he directed Murder By Phone some time. I also have a soft spot for that sci-fi film Millennium.

Taiwanese actor Sun Yueh, who played General Han in Legend of the Mountain (as well as Esquire Wen in Raining in the Mountain) but was probably best known abroad as Inspector Kwong in City on Fire.

Sad to hear of Olmi's passing. Just watched Il Posto again the other day - what a magical film. I highly recommend I Fidanzati with Tree Of Wooden Clogs to those who have yet to see it.

You rarely hear of anyone being killed by a giraffe.
When I was in Kenya they would say that a giraffe can deliver a mule-style back-kick strong enough to knock over a minivan. They are large animals, but usually seek to avoid any confrontations. Not sure what happened, but a lot of times incidents like this occur when a usually peaceful animal is trying to protect its young or feels very threatened. Edit: the guy was filming close-ups of some parts of the giraffe who took exception, swung his neck and delivered a head butt that sent the director flying. At least they are not going to kill the giraffe involved, which is too often the default response to such encounters.

Absolutely agreed on all points, including being glad the giraffe won't be killed. I've spent time in southern Africa and there is no reason to get that close to an animal in the bush. Use your lenses and stay safe.

Remarkable that Turner Classic Movies already had an Olmi double-feature scheduled for Sunday, May 20 (early Monday). Now, sweetly appropriate...
