And how do you reconcile that with me being one of the most mainstream-championing people around here?

Ack. It's a habit. I meant to type XXX

or did you mean "DP"?

Indeed, most of his films haven't had the proper releases, a shame when you consider how upfront and articulate Schrader is about his life/films. If titles like Blue Collar, Hardcore, American Gigolo, Patty Hearst, or Affliction could be salvaged, they'd be day one buys. Witch Hunt would also be a real coup.

Well; this pretty much proves that Criterion will release Ain't Them Bodies Saints on dvd/blu.

Matthew Southman and Eric Skillman were commissioned to create a comic book prologue to the film. Eric Skillman is of course Criterion's in-house graphic designer. I'm sure the comic book will come packaged in the eventual dvd/blu release. (Criterion did this before with Blast of Silence)

Good news it isn't a Criterion release. Anyone who said they want this film in the collection has never seen what a horrible mess it is.

Boo. I wanted it in the collection and I've seen it. We don't all have the same taste in films, sir.

I don't think it was Criterion worthy but The Canyons was hardly awful. It's much better than your typical middle of the road crap that Sundance/SXSW has pretty much shaped low budget American films to be. Critics had their knives out for this film. It's a movie that has a lot of problems but also does a lot of things well.

Sundance Selects/IFC have just picked up Claire Denis' Bastards.

Interesting background piece about the nightmare of production from Venice with some interesting nuggets from Schrader on dealing with his wayward star...

This being particularly priceless...
At one stage, while preparing a nude scene, Schrader took the unusual step of stripping naked himself in order to coax the actor from her dressing room.
Film itself reportedly a something of a car crash...

ATBS is outstanding. Can't wait for the blu.
What is usually the lag time for CC to release an IFC film?

Normally a year or two from the theatrical run, but Frances Ha had a turnaround of only a few months, so I guess it's up in the air until we get a few more titles and see a pattern form again.

Frances Ha was probably special because of their relationship with Baumbach.

Uh, there was a long New York Times piece from months before the film was released that goes into much greater detail on all of that stuff. You should probably read that.

Thought this might be worth a mention. IFC has acquired the rights to The Duke Of Burgundy which goes into production next month. It's the new feature from Peter Strickland who got rave reviews for Berberian Sound Studio last year. Berberian Sound Studio has yet to materialize from MPI and the poster was done by regular Criterion collaborator Neil Kellerhouse; so I think it's quite likely Criterion will release it eventually.

Any Strickland they could release would be wonderful.

plus Berberian Sound Studio's score was done by James Cargill from Broadcast, and an interview with him would be fantastic.

I'm a bit biased though, they're one of my favorite bands.

Anyone know off hand what IFC films are heading CC's way?
