Re: 88 Films

I presume there'll be some picture improvements over the French blu ray, Deux Flics a Miami? That's my go-to right now, the disc with the theatrical cut.
That would require another 88/Shaw deal.
Four Moods includes a segment from King Hu, and I wondered a while ago if Eureka would include it in one of their King Hu releases one day - as well as another anthology film, The Wheel of Life. Another of the directors in both anthology films is Lee Hsing, who directed Execution in Autumn (also released by Eureka). I wonder if there's more cleanup that needs doing after the restoration of either film that is preventing such releases?Orlac wrote: Sun Nov 05, 2023 9:35 amThat would require another 88/Shaw deal.
Beauty of Beauties is from the same Taiwanese company as Four Moods - https://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml? ... ay_set=eng - which sounds ideal for release too!
Both Beauty of Beauties and Four Moods are now with the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute. The latter has a 2K restoration that the TFAI released on Blu a few months ago, alongside a 2K restoration of The Wheel of Life. Beauty of Beauties is a 4K restoration.Orlac wrote: Sun Nov 05, 2023 9:35 amBeauty of Beauties is from the same Taiwanese company as Four Moods - https://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml? ... ay_set=eng - which sounds ideal for release too!
If they do, they should also get Diao Charn, The Magnificent Concubine, and Beyond the Great Wall from Shaw Bros. to complete the 4 Great Beauty of China series.Orlac wrote: Sun Nov 05, 2023 9:35 amThat would require another 88/Shaw deal.

Was told last year from an insider that this was coming to the US, but not from whom. Glad that rumor was true!dwk wrote:Even though the specs don't mention it, the Project A set is dual-format UHD/Blu-ray release.

Random thing I noticed about Fight Back to School 3: A motif repeated at least a few times in the film's score sounds remarkably similar to Boards of Canada's "Tears from the Compound Eye". They're even in the same key, though I doubt the song sampled the movie. This song instantly sends me into catatonic bliss, which is kind of a weird place from which to be watching this profoundly silly filmxxnomad wrote: Tue Feb 28, 2023 3:01 pm The Fight Back to School films are hilarious. Very wacky and surreal. It's been 10 plus years since I saw them but I remember absolutely loving the first two. Marx Brothers meets the Police Story films.
Personally, I didn't enjoy the film so much as its reputation might suggest when I saw it about 18 months ago. But I had a lot to say about it on my letterboxd review: https://letterboxd.com/feihong/film/the ... d/reviews/Finch wrote: Tue Jan 02, 2024 4:02 am One of 88's next HK titles will be The Holy Virgin vs The Evil Dead, at least for the UK, as the BBFC gave the film a 15 for home video certification. It certainly sounds wild as the BBFC mentions, uhm, exploding buttocks.
