I somehow missed this but Criterion and Studiocanal have teamed up to restore 2 films from Soviet director Kira Muratova (Brief Encounters and The Long Farewell), and both will be screened at the Ritrovato Festival.

very awesome and welcome news. Muratova was Ukrainian, so even though it took something intense for them to get there...I'm glad to see Criterion tap into that country's film works even more. hopefully we see these as a dual release, since they were consecutive in her filmography anyway.yoloswegmaster wrote: Fri Jun 10, 2022 7:16 pm I somehow missed this but Criterion and Studiocanal have teamed up to restore 2 films from Soviet director Kira Muratova (Brief Encounters and The Long Farewell), and both will be screened at the Ritrovato Festival.
someone broke this down in the Radiance thread but these are Odessa Studio productions and not Mosfilm, I wonder who owns them now? because Wikipedia sorta indicates it's the Ukrainian government (which would make sense, and Criterion have licensed from numerous state run studios before - Czech Republic, Taiwan, Hungary, Sweden, and of course Russia), but since Studiocanal is involved I'm wondering if they acquired that catalog. anyone know?

That's far enough away they should consider running the AI upscale again closer to release. The tech is developing by leaps and bounds.yoloswegmaster wrote: Sat Jun 11, 2022 12:32 am In other news, Sabrina Sutherland confirmed on Reddit that the Inland Empire disc won't be coming out until next year.

The Terence Davies Trilogy (Children, Madonna and Child, Death and Transfiguration) are all on the Channel with Criterion and Janus logos.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned but the World Cinema Project have restored Luis Bunuel's Él. Hopefully we get a Bunuel in Mexico set soon.

Not sure if anyone made note of this, but The Last Picture Show has been restored in 4K. Potential standalone? :-k

It was mentioned in the "Recent Restorations" thread along with many other Criterion prospects being shown at Ritrovato.

this tweet could be totally unrelated, but let's hope it does mean the Rohmer Four Seasons boxset is announced today.

I would be more confident if that image were from one of the Four Seasons films. Still, my fingers are crossed.

Two Girls on the Street might need a prize for fewest letterboxd watches of a criterion, 036!

If I'm remembering correctly, The Inland Sea didn't have a single review when it was announced.movielocke wrote: Wed Jun 15, 2022 4:59 pm Two Girls on the Street might need a prize for fewest letterboxd watches of a criterion, 036!

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
There must be some sly irony at play in the UHD releases being of a film about deafness and an upgrade of a film all about sound recording in the same month!

According to a Reddit user who went to a screening with one of the producers in attendance, Criterion will be releasing Todd Haynes' 'Velvet Goldmine'.

Velvet Goldmine is no longer on Miramax's website, so I assume the rights reverted to either Killer Films or Film4.
