Wonderful example which shows the differences between Flying Spot Scanner telecine technology (albeit a poorer example of that) compared to modern CCD technology. Film transfer has come a long way.

The new (2008) anamorphic transfer (PAL, 1.62:1) is simply excellent! There's some background hiss in the Italian DD 2.0 mono soundtrack, but, supposedly, it's much cleaner / clearer than the previous offerings. Czech subtitles only.

Yes, they're removable (for the film, there's an option to turn them off in the setting menu; for the Chris Marker docu, it's possible to turn them off using the RC)...

The BFI's
Tokyo Story - grabs taken from the DVD as I don't have the wherewithal to do BD grabs. But the source master is the same, and I can confirm that the BD is appreciably sharper (and grainier, but that's not a complaint).
(frames deliberately chosen to match
these Beaver grabs)
The DVD appears to be native PAL with no sign of standards conversion, which is what one would expect given that it was obviously sourced from an HD master.
UPDATE: Beaver now has
full 1080p framegrabs.

The BFI's
Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family, the supporting feature on their
Tokyo Story DVD/BD:
The last grab reveals that this is (presumably unavoidably) from the same source as the Panorama disc featured on DVD Beaver
here - though it appears to be PAL with no sign of standards conversion (I stepped through a shot of someone walking, and there was no sign of ghosting or repeated frames). The subtitles are also clearly superior, at least in terms of English usage - I can't vouch for the translation.

What Did The Lady Forget?, supporting DVD-only feature to
Early Summer - sourced from a Shochiku master that was clearly also the source of the Panorama release, although the BFI's subtitles are more coherent (at least in terms of their English).

The DVD appears to be native and progressive PAL with no sign of standards conversion - the running time of 1:08:14 looks like what I'd expect from the Panorama's 1:11:00 after PAL speedup.

The third picture from the BFI DVD of "Late Spring" looks a lot like that of the Criterion. I have the feeling that the BFI release generally looks like the Criterion (too bright or contrasty) which is not a good thing.

I've already confirmed in the BFI thread that both this release and the Criterion one came from the same HD master -though both the BFI transfers have a visual edge over the Criterion release thanks to being either full 1080p HD (the Blu-ray) or non-windowboxed (the DVD).

We've seen the Criterion and BFI "Red Desert" releases looking differently even though they came from the same HD source. Couldn't the BFI have done some digital magic to reduce the brightness or contrast for their "Late Spring" release?
