I agree with you, although ~20 years later I'm still a little surprised that that kid in Tower Records had never heard of the Rolling Stones' Hot Rocks (when it was recently released).

I got a "Who are the Rolling Stones?" and a "Who is Ringo Starr?" on the same day. I'm now expecting the bank to make an error in my favor...

A propos Obscure-ities: I went by Borders during the 40% off weekend. Had to order it in the store (they didn't have it on the shelves, but it meant no shipping), but I picked up That Obscure Object of Desire from the post office today. I should pop it in the DVD player to check it, but I'm feeling grateful that it worked out.

Strangely enough,... there is a $100 deposit from 7/9 for a "spring promo reward" showing in my bank account. And I have no idea what that is (and I am *not* making this up).

Signs and wonders, I say. Signs and wonders.

To those wondering about jr.com:

I ordered Obscure Object from them on June 1 and received it today. Very fast shipping given I live in Canada.

I was just about to buy it off of some guy on Ebay for forty dollars, but decided to check froogle.com before doing so. That's how I discovered J&R. If I had have gone with the Ebayer, I'd still be waiting and would be out a few dollars. It looked kind of fishy too. [-(

Well, placed an order for "A Woman Is A Woman" and "Diary of a Country Priest" from Barnes & Noble (even though the latter doesn't get 50% discount). It's the only OOP Studio Canal titles I'm really interested in (B&N also has "Milky Way," "Port of Shadows," "Small Back Room," "Billy Liar," "Diary of a Chambermaid" and a couple of other OOP Studio Canals) but, after Deep Discount not coming through for me with "AWIAW," I don't really have my hopes up I'll receive either 'Woman' or 'Country Priest.' :|

In regards to the OOP titles, if the B&N site says "special order: 3-5 weeks" then you're probably out of luck. Since Country Priest was not discounted for the sale and says "usually ships within 2-3 days," I think you have a decent chance. If not, Amazon still has copies.

Did anybody manage to get a confirmation for an B&N order for Diary of a Chambermaid since the sale started?

If you are in the US, you've just got to bite the bullet and order direct from Criterion when they announce these things. A little painful on the credit card, but the e-tailers just can't be counted upon in such emergencies.

So is this Olive Films some kind of crapshoot? They seem to devote themselves to having OOP titles in stock, but the obvious question is: how?

Perhaps the reason is that they aren't the first name that comes to mind in online retail/ they want the attraction to their Opus line?

In either case, I ordered Straw Dogs. It took a few days before a shipping notice arrived- but the package arrived today (first class)- though in a Barnes and Noble inspired cardboard carton thing. It all checks out (no damage, not a bootleg) and I would say Olive has my business.

New. Shrinkwrapped with the "limited time only" sticker on it. Only $34 shipped as well (though to be fair, Straw Dogs never really went up in price after it went OOP- as you can notice by the $45 new on Amazon marketplace). Great deal nonetheless.

Order I placed over a week ago at Olive Films still says "pending" but I realized they charged my card the day I placed the order for the full amount. That's messed up. I asked them to cancel it since a very kind member here found one for me at the B&N sale, but I got an email back saying they are "awaiting stock" and then changed the status to "processing" or some shit. That's some shady business right there. I have emailed them back asking to issue a refund and cancel the order, because if they don't have any, they ain't getting them and informed them that I would not be buying from them in the future and to examine their policy about charging instantly for OOS items, especially out of print ones.

Now all I have to do is find a copy of Big Deal on Madonna Street during this sale, and i'll have checked off all the SC titles I want.
