This has been pushed from August 8 to September 26. Warners reshuffled a good chunk of its release schedule (including
Weapons and Maggie Gyllenhaal's
The Bride) to move this a month later. Deadline says that this was done to both get the film closer to fall awards season and to allow it to see a 70mm release in some theaters, though maybe it'll now show up at Venice.

That looks at least sort of like something I might actually thoroughly and whole-heartedly like, which is not what I usually feel about PTA movies! Particularly his recent "alcoholic" phase, at least that's what I call them (and these are mostly movies I haven't actually seen, so I of course can't truly pronounce on them.)
PS why does he not work with Luis Guzman anymore? If you ask me, LG is the secret MVP of both Boogie Nights and Magnolia. Such a gifted improviser.

Guzman is a joy to watch in everything. I even love his brief supporting part at the beginning of Ridley Scott’s
Black Rain

Looks amazing and also, surprisingly, like it's actually an action movie. Given how great the "car chase" in
Licorice Pizza was, I think he can pull it off. Glad they kept the martial arts from
Vineland.

I had recently seen him in
Variety and had no clue it was one of his earliest roles. It's 100% a Luis Guzman role as trying to exude the energy of being some sort of Latin playboy while just being a harmless dork. He's a special talent.

I like that the trailer seems equally invested in assuring regular audiences it will be action/comedy-packed and assuring the real heads it will be adequately Inherent Vicey.

And I noticed in the YouTube description that this is the first PTA without Mark Bridges on costumes. It's Colleen Atwood which I think is the first instance of PTA extending his Demme love to hiring his former crew members.

A real hot streak in the late 90s in three Soderberghs and De Palma's Snake Eyes.

True heads know PTA is a pot smoker, not an alcholic.

The truth, and the essential truth of the PTA filmography, is both: the early "boy genius" movies are cocaine incarnate, and the shift to the "history" movies is him making pot his only drug of choice.

This reminds of both Lumet's Running on Empty and Redford's The Company You Keep....I wonder if Anderson can wring something new out of this idea.

There it is. There’s the trailer Warner Bros. paid $120 million or whatever for. Stars, pure action, some Tarantinoesque banter, a Beyoncé/Kendrick song on top. Let’s hope WB can sell it as well as they sold Sinners so they keep PTA working.

It could be interesting to see for the politics, especially given the setting and characters (former '6os revolutionaries at the height of Reagan's '80s). Even if the framework is familiar, it doesn't matter, there are always key differences in politics and the ideas and history get interpreted accordingly.

The setting has been updated to present times, so there are apparently allusions to Trump's America much like Reagan in Vineland, though not naming names

Not a joke or an ironic comment: apparently there will be some sort of One Battle After Another crossover with Fortnite per their official Instagram account.

Seeing as I doubt Epic Games is going to tie their vbucks to a radical political message, I’m going to downgrade my expectations for this being too edgy.

WB is moving the embargo dates up because this is getting great responses in recent screenings. There was some bad intel that this was bombing test screenings but that doesn’t seem to be reflected in current responses. Penn apparently is now a threat for a third Oscar over Skarsgard, who was seen as this season’s shoo-in

(below spoiler is only tagged because I haven't seen the film and can't confirm or deny it, but nothing majorly spoiler-y here)
Apparently there is some next-level car chase stuff, and a scene with Penn and DiCaprio facing off in that classic PTA fashion that goes on for over 30 minutes. Unless I've been had by people making shit up.
