Just watched this, and for something that was allegedly a retrenchment for Lang and the studio, this was glorious fun. Long story short,
Metropolis nearly ruined the studio due to its cost, and they were unable to break their contract with Lang, so they demanded that his next picture cost a lot less money, with the additional pressure of making a profit. What we get is proto-typical James Bond, complete with its own Blofeld, except more interesting and even more compelling thanks to the production's historical context and story elements that feel cheekily contemporary at the same time.
The bad guys make a bank their home. The lead villain is even the bank director.

I finaly got the change to watch this glorious film. Afterwards I watched the documentary and I think that is one of the most insightful extra's I have seen in a long time. It's full of details about the production and the influence Spione has on other movies. The clips of other silents are a delight as well. And most of them are shown in great condition (one can only hope they will see the light of day on Blu-ray). I checked on IMDB and this documentary is not listed. I'm grateful Masters of Cinema has included this. Also, two different scores is something I applaud with silent movies. MoC is the best company to release silents I think and I hope they continue to do so in the future.

I plan on watching this soon but what is the additional 6 minutes on the newer blu releases? The old dvd releases from kino and MoC have a 144 minute runtime while the blus are rounded out at 150 minutes

The old Kino disc's transfer is improperly converted from PAL to NTSC, retaining the PAL runtime while introducing ghosting effects.
