Kino is releasing Delirious starring John Candy. Now I can only hope they'll also do Michael Moore's Canadian Bacon. I know it's not a film that gets a lot of love, but it is one of my personal favorite comedies, one that I'll often watch when sick to help me feel better (the very first time I saw it was when my mom rented it for me while I had pneumonia in middle school).

I wish Kino Lorber can release more noirs from MGM's DVD-R line - 99 River Street, The Big Night, The Captive City, Chicago Confidential and the most problematic transfer, The Killer Is Loose.

Yeeeaaah! 99 River Street is the best Phil Karlson film, to my mind. It's not as cleanly put-together as Kansas City Confidential or Phenix City Story, or 5 Against the House, but the feels are twice as intense! It's the best vehicle for John Payne, as well––his best role, where he really flowers as a unique character––a boxer full of regrets, not educated, innocent in a lot of ways, but not an idiot. Evelyn Keyes is super-theatrical, but lots of fun and surprising in the way she melts into a sympathetic character as the story develops. It's a harsh and very dynamic movie. So worth a blu ray!

Agreed. One of the things that really makes this film special is that it clearly lays out the skill sets of its protagonist in advance and then allows those talents to pay off in the climax. John Payne is a washed up boxer with a chip on his shoulder? Yeah, you can just bet he's gonna be duking it out with the bad guy at the end. Evelyn Keyes is an actress? Yeah, when it's time to vamp the bad guy, she'll be on the scene batting her eyelashes. And what about the bad guy himself? Brad Dexter, never better, oozing slime. And did I mention Jay Adler is also in the picture? Man, how will I be able to wait for this?

There's also an interesting aspect of the script, where all of the conflicts in the film are laid out verbally in terms of boxing metaphors––which I think is done exceptionally well. There's a great bit where Payne bemoans the end of his marriage, saying his wife "wanted a ringside seat and ended up in the gallery." That one's especially poignant the way Payne delivers it. There's a whole bunch of glorious boxing metaphors dancing through the script.

He's a nasty jerk in a lot of movies, but in this film he is so interesting, not just a mega-creep, but another character whom you watch to see what will happen to them. No one in the film is completely unsympathetic, and Dexter is one of those characters you find yourself interested in, even as he oozes slime.

The more I think about it, the better the film gets. I forgot to mention the presence of Peggie Castle! She is given not one but two great "leg reveals." Can't wait to see those in 1080p.
