May Wave, what a bunch of crap!

I beg to differ as far as one title is concerned: Last night when I was young, Angel Heart scared the shit out of me. I think it's a very effective and underrated thriller! Robert De Niro steals the show as Satan, putting his carefully filed and elongated fingernails to excellent use as they elegantly and ominously open a hard-boiled egg. This movie gave me HQ nightmares! Highly recommended if you are partial to thrillingly bad dreams!

Possibly; a new restoration is a done deal, and on another forum a chap involved in the restoration of The Ladykillers said that Studio Canal had been prepared to spend a good deal of money. All part of this initiative.

I have no doubt it'll make it as part of the SCC. Whether it makes it to the US via Lionsgate sooner rather than later is the real question. They're already 7-8 titles behind.

A fair bit of chat re: the aspect ratio for the Ladykillers, but is no one else perplexed by the extreme difference between the BD and the old Anchor Bay DVD as presented at DVD Beaver?

I know screenshots don't tell the whole story, but the brightness levels on the BD seem extreme, and the last comparison makes the BD look terrible - the old lady is totally washed out.

I've often thought that Beaver's BD captures are too bright when compared to when I've played back the same disc on my system. All the reviews seem fairly positive towards the picture quality, so I'm willing to chalk it up to the captures being unrepresentative.

It would take a rare commentator/scholar who's been hired to do an "extra" for the dvd a hell of a lot of clout to influence the actual shape and outcome of the telecine. There are very few examples I can think of.

Well, you can add another one to your list, as I've just been invited to attend an entire telecine process as an expert witness - mostly charged with helping identify the best source materials from a large number of cans of 35mm negative and positive film and assorted magnetic soundtracks, but I should certainly have some input into how it ends up on disc.

I can't reveal the title yet, I'm afraid, but all the VHS and DVD releases I've seen to date have been very disappointing, so I'm relishing the opportunity to influence the shape of what we alI hope will be the definitive version. It looks as though some of the supplied cans contain the original 35mm camera negative, so here's hoping it's in good shape. (In this case, there's no argument whatsoever about the aspect ratio, so at least we can guarantee getting that right!)

Since you're involved, my guess is that it's Eastern European--Czech, Polish or Hungarian.

My dream would be a new transfer of Paradjanov's The Color of Pomegranates. But I know that's too much to hope for, alas!

I've been a very good lad in not supporting half-assed or misguided Blu-ray releases, and as much as I wanted to boycott the Contempt release -- not for taking something from Mother Criterion, but rather taking something from a company that'd put a lot more effort and heart into cleaning up and presenting a film I loved -- I just couldn't. And I'm glad I didn't. It isn't definitive in the least, but everything is "as it should be", and I couldn't recommend it more for a cool $25 on Amazon.
