Brilliant! Now it looks like a film from 1932, though probably rather like something from Russia than from Germany. Give the old one to Criterion, then. Their cover looks as if this was some Italian vampire exploitation film from the early 60s...
In any case, another plus for MoC when it comes to that terrible decision for which edition to go.

I love the new MoC cover, but hate that font!

The font on the CC cover, incidentally, reminds me of the computer generated font from the shepard disc

Vampyr is technically a French film. Made in France, by Dreyer's French production company, but premiered first in Germany.

The poster we've based our sleeve on is by the great poster designer Raymond Gid, and was used as the French theatrical poster from 1932.

The font is from the original French 1932 poster by Raymond Gid, so I don't have any qualms about it -- it's not as if it was picked out of a modern fonts catalogue.

btw. Raymond Gid also designed the LE SILENCE DE LA MER poster that we used.

Personally, I would buy Vampyr if the cover was hot pink with neon green lettering, but I have to say that I think this new MoC cover is the best of all.

Not sure why the link in my above post to the Image font isn't working, you can just google "Vampyr dvd" and see the title screen on the image results page

Though to be fair I thought you were talking about the horrible subtitle font from the Image disc!

No you were right domino.. for some reason when I clicked on the link in prev post I couldnt bring it up. That's absolutelyy the title screen I meant, and the CC cover looks really close to it. WHy they'd want to associate themselves with the worst digital subbing job in the medium (it really is notorious) I have no idea!

For what its worth the font I liked best is this spraypainty logo:

Criterion's cover is cliched, at least it reminds me of really dull teenage gothic fantasies... too neilgaimanish, even though it could be debated if it's near the film's original vision. I personally think it doesn't. I prefer the new MoC cover. It has some elegantly mysterious touch in it which I feel is the heart of the film.

Well it was one of the still images from the film, so hopefully it'll be in the booklet. I hope they use some of the stills in it because the photographs are stunning (shot in the same gauze style as the film).

Can i just say, the new Vampyr cover on MoC website using the poster, beautiful!

I like the way MoC have reappropriated the font of "l'etrange aventure de David Gray" into English (and changed the name to Allan) Very well designed nick et al

I always liked the original MoC cover but I have to say that this new one is growing on me. Good work, again.

I don't suppose there's any chance of MoC issuing digipacs in the future?
I always choose you guys over CC where there is overlap but if the image and extras on this title are similar, the only thing that could make me pick up the CC would be if the MoC is in the usual plastic amaray and the CC is housed in a lovely cardboard case like Ugetsu/ Sansho/ Veronique etc

I'm the complete opposite as I find digipacks wear out far too quickly, looking ragged and worn in no time. But I would always be won by price over packaging and with the dollar the way it is this makes it tough for MoC. However with the recent Mizo's that price is pretty hard to beat even for the weak dollar.

'Fraid we're not fans of digipaks and their inbuilt obsolescence -- the crappy plastic tray with fatally broken spindle glued to the cardboard backing. Buying one, and receiving it slightly shattered in the post, gives me such a futile feeling that I just can't bring myself to design digipak packaging for an MoC release. Sorry!

If you did make a one-off digi just for me, I'd pay quite handsomely for it...

That's a good point my Nosferatu case is broken, I wouldn't mind another Scanavo, providing it doesn't break in the post again. I think once it's on the shelf it will be fine.

If we were a major studio or something, we'd have the resources to put such a plan into operation --- but we can't really start sending out boxes and new sleeves around the world to replace -unbroken- boxes. If you really need all your MoC spines the same width it's probably best to sell it on amazon marketplace and then rebuy.

Good grief, the cases, the "meaty" or "fat" books, do people these days need physical substantiality to go with their digital films? An album saves an entire bookshelf.

I don't know what to think about La Vie de Jesus cover. I do like the image and font, but it just seems so out of place with the rest of the entries...

The cover rules and it fits in because it rules.

I like these MoC covers because they have an inscrutable sense of design but without calling the design into question-- unlike criterion who takes chances by rebranding films, both with their identity and a revised modern flair.

Incidentally, and not pointed at MoC, are there dvd companies that are-- as much as I loathe the term-- taking a "green" stance on their production, as in recycled cardboard cases? I don't know a thing about the possibility of this, but its evident that we can't continue to bury ourselves in plastic.
