It is brighter (if just a tad) - on the plus side, for those still needing subtitles, they are in white. It plays quite well - although after 50+ viewings over the years, I'm still dreaming for the sublime treatment. The 1992 'Varda Restoration' really needs a touch-up.

Just had a quick look at Young Girls....I'll post caps later, but I don't think it comes close to the Mirimax.

I prefer the Miramax (usually a never..) if only because the image has better clarity.
Plus, the Mirimax has no cropping on the left. The young bluebob on the left is no longer in the movie!

Thanks for posting those. Looks pretty much identical to me, except for a bit higher contrast on the Shochiku. A real bargain for under 8 bucks!

Brigands, Chapter VII / Brigands, chapitre VII (Otar Iosseliani, 1996)

First the Facets (Region 1 NTSC, 2003), which speaks for itself:

Then the Blaq out (Region 2 PAL, 2004, French subs only):

And finally, the Cinema Prestige (Region 5 PAL, 2007, Russian and English subs):

Looks as if the Russian disc is using an identical transfer to the French, which is good.

Can someone explain to me why these R4 caps have greater resolution?

And anamorphic transfers are 1024 x 576? and R1 is 853 x 480?

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't this a disadvantage?

All other things being equal, you will get a more detailed image with a PAL transfer on PAL equipment. Plus, the movie will be over 4% sooner, which is no small bonus if you're watching the latest Oliver Stone.

Wait until you try to apply for a job as a "lord" in The House of Lords! If I didn't know better I'd suspect nepotism and grandfathering run rampant within those decent hallowed halls. But since it's a government job we know there are protections.. EOE and all that. Maybe you'll have better luck than I did, though. Just saying.

Built-in unfairness strikes in the most unexpected of places..

No, anamorphic and non-anamorphic transfers have the same total resolution (720x576 PAL, 720x480 NTSC). The captures are bigger because anamorphic DVDs use non-square pixels and the aspect ratio will be incorrect unless the caps are resized.
