Portlandia Complete Series obv

Can someone remind what the rights situation is with Twin Peaks? Does CBS/Showtime/Paramount or whomever still hold the rights to all 3 seasons or have they reverted back to Lynch/Frost?

Wouldn't it be crazy if the "big box" this year is just Twin Peaks?? Doubt it's just a FWWM 4K upgrade because Frost isn't involved in that one.

I'm not holding my breath, but the Frost retweet is weird. That being said, we already had Twin Peaks people cryptically retweeting and commenting things around the Lynch rumors earlier this year and that didn't amount to anything. Might just be an excitable bunch.

The thought had occurred to me a while back that while Criterion doesn’t do releases of television series, Twin Peaks would be the obvious choice for which to make an exception if the opportunity ever presented itself — which, given their apparently good relationship with Lynch, it could.

The Complete Twin Peaks, complete with all three seasons of the series plus FWWM, would be absolutely amazing. But yeah, I’m not holding my breath either.

As a side note, are there any other TV series we could envision Criterion releasing in the future if they do indeed put out Twin Peaks to set the precedent?

Man, everyone’s gonna be pissed when the December announcement rolls around and it turns out to be Oliver Stone’s The Doors.

While Criterion has released any number of mini-series, they have definitely released at least one TV series — Fishing with John.

Also, a few episodes of I Love Lucy and The Addams Family in the laserdisc era… to say nothing of the wonderful Golden Age of Television set.

As well as Altman's Tanner 88'.

Hard to imagine what Criterion could add to the stacked Twin Peaks Z-A set from a couple years ago… unless it was *all* in 4K, but that really doesn’t sound like something they would do. More likely to me they’d upgrade FWWM to 4K, and it’d be nice to get some Kyle perspective on that film now

Scenes from a Marriage, Fanny & Alexander, Eight Hours Don't Make a Day, and Agnes Varda: From Here to There as well.

I guess I should have clarified: they have yet to release a complete TV series that spans multiple seasons. All of the releases so far have been miniseries or, in the case of Fishing with John, a series that only lasted six episodes. Certainly nothing as sprawling as a complete Twin Peaks set would be.

Maybe MacLachlan is there for The Trial? He was in an adaptation with Anthony Hopkins and Jason Robards in '93, penned by Harold Pinter. Could be a special feature on the Welles version.

Have they ever done interviews relating to a film that is "just" a bonus feature (if your speculation ends up being correct)?

Other than The Doors and The Trial, I can only see Hamlet by Michael Almereyda as a likely Criterion pick-up if it's not a FWWM UHD. If it was FWWM related (and I agree, it'd be interesting to hear Kyle speak candidly about the experience), it would also be cool to hear from Mary Sweeney, and Joel Bocko's Lost In The Movies segment on FWWM is a great analytical piece even though it's been available on Youtube all this time.

They commissioned a whole piece for equinox flower about the red tea pot in Ozu films (it’s a great special feature only only on the channel)

Its obviously for the Dune special edition with exclusive David Lynch commentary!

(Since we are wildly speculating, I would not be upset at an upgrade of Mike Figgis' Timecode, in which MacLachlan appears at around the halfway point!)

This has already been mentioned in the Discussion/Random Speculation thread, but since it’s applicable here, they have announced a delay in announcements on their Twitter coupled with an image from The Power of the Dog, so it looks like we’re getting that in November.

Lars von Trier's The Kingdom Seasons 1 and 2 were recently remastered and sold to global distributors with the new season The Kingdom: Exodus. That seems like something Criterion could be interested in.

I'm sorry but we really don't need to see Criterion take on TV aside from the random mini series from a favored director (Fassbinder, Bergman). their resources are already stretched thin enough with the movies that need releasing that they're often sitting on in many cases, throwing all the manpower at TV...please spare it.

this same argument came up when people asked why Letterboxd doesn't do as much TV, please let TV be TV and movies be movies. at least this is how I feel!

While I agree that it would be superfluous and exhaustive to see Criterion release the nth iteration of Twin Peaks just to get the brand recognition, The Kingdom/Riget has been treated poorly and if any label wants to take a shot at it, it'd be most welcome. Riget is barely longer than Eight Hours Don't Make a Day, which isn't even a box set and matches the price/packaging of a normal film's release. If they waited to include the latest season, it might be about as long as Berlin Alexanderplatz, which is also (clearly) doable

Plus von Trier's priemiering this in NYC in a few weeks, so he's clearly no longer canceled and Criterion is free to do whatever they want with his work

They've been doing TV since Spine #42 so it wouldn't be a new development. They've released more TV than they have animation. I don't think we need to worry about them releasing eight seasons of Game of Thrones but they're hardly going to turn down Twin Peaks if they opportunity somehow presented itself.

Why are so many people keen on Criterion re-releasing the Twin Peaks TV series? What was wrong with the old BR set? I didn’t buy it, as I didn’t feel like upgrading it, but I read generally very good reviews about it, so not sure what could be improved.
And why do not more people believe the picture of Kyle MacLachlan refers to a potential UHD upgrade of Blue Velvet, as one poster speculated early on?

I don't think any are particularly likely but in terms of multi-season shows there's Heimat, The Young Pope / The New Pope, Top of the Lake, Euphoria....the list of mini/telefilm series is obviously much longer including Small Axe and The Underground Railroad, which could conceivably be within the reach of Criterion's Amazon deal.
