I won't get my hopes up, but I'll say that I would be very happy if this indicates a Criterion of Married to the Mob. The Kino release is out-of-print...

Modine is certainly one of the more charming guests they've had.

At first I was like "wait, wasn't it shot in standard-def digital." And then I realized "oh, domino is just being a smart ass."

domino's obvious joke about what I'm about to bring up aside I cannot fathom what could possibly be done to make it look better unless I'm severely misinformed about what Inland Empire was shot with (DV?). All I remember is what was very clearly meant to be an intentional muddiness.

This was actually put out on Blu-ray in the UK. I can't speak to what they managed to do with the source since I haven't watched my copy yet-- maybe one day!

There is definitely work that can be done to clean up shot on video and give a better presentation, as well as just the basic impetus to put out a good release that will be in print forever as Janus will be able to... Bamboozled looks really good and was worth releasing for its improved presentation regardless of if it is actually native HD.

As long as they add "More Things That Happened" to any Inland Empire release I will be more than happy. I think I like that even more than the main feature because being a collection of random scenes it dispenses with any sense of linear narrative entirely and just becomes a place to linger in.

The original Absurda DVD has several great extras like that, yet to be replicated elsewhere

Three questions regarding "Three Reasons", Criterion's 2011-2015 YouTube series:

Firstly, why did it end? It was a novel idea and a nice alternative to the faux modern trailers created by many other labels for classic releases.

Secondly, what happened to number 54? Does anyone know what it was and why it was pulled?

Lastly, for a label usually so assiduous about correct presentation, especially regarding aspect ratios, why was the wrong-headed decision made to crop every film to 1.78:1 irrespective of OAR?

and now we have Withnail and I as well

Bad Timing seems pretty likely for an upgrade. the question is whether the rights to Withnail and I have returned. Arrow's release was locked to region B...

The rights to the Handmade Films library returned several years ago, though Mona Lisa is only reissue we have yet to see.

Had about thought about Time Bandits, but the licensor is listed as RLJ Entertainment, not Handmade Films (like Mona Lisa). However maybe should have included it since it seemed to go oop at the same time as the others...

Ah, so it is. I just assumed that it was licensed directly from Handemade films.

Anders Danielsen Lie has been in the closet

Interestingly, they mention Joachim Trier's whole Oslo Trilogy which makes me wonder if they'll release a box set as well as The Worst Person in the World. Though I think Oslo August 31st is still with Strand.

There were two posts Criterion did on Twitter yesterday that might have been hints for a flash sale today? I don’t know, their hints are usually a bit more obvious, but of course because everyone’s expecting the flash sale, the posts have been interpreted by commenters as hints anyway.

Does anyone have a more solid indication of a flash sale happening today? This is the date that would fall in line with when they’ve done it in recent years (last Tuesday of February), but is it possible it’s actually going to be next Tuesday instead?

Usually they send out emails to people who’ve been longtime customers and often send voucher codes to channel subscribers in the days before so I have doubts we would just get it as a surprise today.

Yep, I think we can safely say now the flash sale isn’t today. Those would have been some really vague clues if that’s what they were, but obviously the ones reading them as hints were just doing it out of wishful thinking. So it’ll probably be next Tuesday. They’ve done it in early March before, so I think some people just got too fixated on it being the last Tuesday of February.
