I'm going to Rome for 1st time in 8 days. Please, may be this is not the thread but I don't know where to post it, does anybody know where to buy DVDs in Rome? I mean, a good store with stock. I'm looking for Il federale, Lamerica, Malena 2 discs and other old Italian releases. I know there's a Fnac but it's so fucking far that I'm afraid I will not have enough time to go there.
That Kapo new dvd, I'm going to buy it.

Alice in the Cities
I bought the german
Arthaus Collection version of Alice in the Cities, its really bad. I guess its pretty much the same bad quality like the R4. But look at the green line on the left side of the frame (its there the whole movie). You cant see it on TV-sets with overscan, but this is pathetic. I would not mind the scratches but there is alot of mosquito noise, its really disturbing.
I havent checked the other version from Kinowelt, which is more expensive, but our local library has got it. i'll probably have a look on it sooner or later.

Sacha Guitry -
Né pour séduire.
A curious collection of mostly non-fictional material (available for the first time for the public) showing some of Guitry's more personal moments captured on film...
... and some rather compromising political statements!
The films included in the box :
- Ceux de chez nous (2 versions, one of them with a commentary by Guitry)
- Film de famille
- Dîner de gala chez les Ambassadeurs
- De Jeanne d'Arc à Philippe Pétain
- Le Comédien (directed by Georges Lautner)
Contrary to the box with
Sacha's feature films, there are no subs.
Ceux de chez nous (1915/1952) :
Guitry introducing his old home movies:

Rodin:

Anatole France:
Dîner de gala chez les Ambassadeurs (1934) :
De Jeanne d'Arc à Philippe Pétain ou 1429-1942 (1944) :

Pratidwandi (The Adversary)
Satyajit Ray, 1972
R2 UK (Mr Bongo Films)
It's hard to believe, but this is even worse than the R2 of Charulata. A horrible transfer (from a video source, by the look of it), burnt-in subs, and ghosting everywhere. The Indian edition (from calcuttaweb.com) is better.

Je t'aime je t'aime (Resnais)
Montparnasse R2, no subs
Extras: 46 mins of analysis & interviews, 32 page booklet
And a sample from the SuperHappyFun version:

The Bridal Procession in Hardanger (1926)
A christmas present from my brother. This looks simply
fantastic.
As is often the case with norwegian releases, this dvd has optional english subtitles.
More information.

Martin, two quick questions:
1.) Where would be the best/cheapest/most English-friendly e-tailer to purchase the Scandinavian Godard Box?
2.) Do all films and extras on that set have English subs?

1) I don't know really, since the cheapest e-tailers I usually use don't ship internationally. But
here's one that does.
2) All films and extras (at least what I've seen of it) has English subs.
The content is pretty much the same as the two Optimum-boxes Vol. 1 & 2, except the Scandinavian has Contempt, Prenom Carmen and Helas pour moi, instead of Breathless & La Chinoise.

Many thanks for the quick reply, Martin. That's basically all I was looking for. The Megastore offering looks like a pretty good deal. (I've used Filmfriiki in the past, but they're quite a bit more expensive and seem to have eliminated their English-friendly function.) All things considered, I'd prefer to get everything in one fell swoop rather than deal with the two different packages from Optimum, which would end up being the slightly more expensive route anyway.
