I've waited to see Rublev on the condition CC will inevitably release a better transfer. I decided that a few years ago...patience is almost at length's end.
So, will Jan. releases will be announced today? It's getting to be around that time...

They've said on Facebook that new releases will be announced by the end of the day.
As for Andrei Rublev, there's a Russian BD with English subtitles that's supposed to be really nice (
people here gave it great reviews), although it is the 185minute version of the film, not Criterion's 205minute.

Looks like a Basil Dearden-Michael Relph Eclipse set is due immiment announcement then... (and seeing as they collaborated on a prolific scale it's likely to be more than these two titles and
Victim.)

I've been waiting for a Dearden set from Optimum for what seems like years; if it comes from Criterion, all the better.

Victim is no minor work, so I doubt it will be relegated to Eclipse. I figure a special edition, and a Deardren Eclipse set following it. Or vice versa.

Criterion Cast also posted a trailer for Dearden's All Night Long. I'd bet cash money on an Eclipse set including those four titles.

Agreed,
Victim is definitely worthy of having a stand-alone release. I love me some Dirk Bogarde!

All but one of the films in the Mizoguchi Eclipse set were major works.
I Was Born But is a major work. Several of the films in the Late Ozu boxset were major works.
Just saying...

Robinson Crusoe was really a priority for upgrade? Really?

Not on my list, certainly. But then again, I wasn't asked.

really waiting on that andrei rublev blu-ray. it would also be nice if criterion focused on re-releasing the widescreen titles that have non-anamorphic transfers (at least the ones they still have rights to) because they are basically unwatchable on an hdtv

Perhaps it's the hangover from October's and November's releases but my general attitiude owards the January line up is "meh."

Wasn't Army of Shadows on StudioCanal death row?
Also, what a complete snoozer of a month.

Maybe they want to create an OOP buying frenzy again. Ala
The Third Man.

Criterion Broadcasted some lame news for Jan. No MGM, IFC, Chaplin...

Re: Army of Shadows, I would've thought the same of Breathless, but the Studio Canal logo appears nowhere on the Blu packaging.

I want it all. If this is a weak month than my budget is thanking heaven that a strong month isn't coming soon. I'll probably only be able to afford the eclipse and Army.

One new film in the main line is a pretty lackluster start to a new year. It would be nice if they had a killer box set up their sleeves for later announcement, but probably not. The Dearden Eclipse set looks good though.

Boo for Jan.
I would much prefer new films rather than Blu-upgrades. Naked Kiss and Shock Corridor are fine.
But I don't need to be updating Robinson C. or Army of Shadows even though I like the film.
crappy month for sure

Yes, a lackluster month from which I will be buying at least four titles.

I imagine many of us who are less than excited about January will still pick up the upgrades of the title we're interested in. It's just that the lack of new titles is an enthusiasm dampener. I support the Blu-ray upgrade mission, but there's only so much inherent excitement that you can get out of it, especially when you're talking about titles Criterion released circa 2007 instead of circa 2001.

The Fuller documentary The Typewriter, the Rifle & the Movie Camera was produced by IFC according to IMDB. Kind of an interesting extension of Criterion's licensing deal with IFC. Wonder what other stuff IFC has the rights to that would make good supplements.
