What ever happened to Soderbergh self-releasing a bunch of his films in 4K?

What are you refering to here ? They have been quite explicit about being quite a brick-and-mortar label but I don't recall them being a company that routinely release movies they don't even own the video rights of.

Sorry tenia, I didn’t mean that the way you interpreted it. Rather, it seems that they’re very opportunistic (hardly a criticism for a business!) and so coupled with how quickly they move, it’s on-brand that they might not slow down enough to consult the filmmaker et al before announcing a release. I’m not an insider but it’s felt like they’ve been dropping unexpected 4K announcements left and right that were owned/released, and sometimes still in print, by Criterion and other studios, which I’ve insinuated to be an intelligently aggressive move to capitalizate on UHD and blu ray rights being different. That’s what I meant by usurp, but I should have probably chosen a different word.

Hey, if selling a few 1,000 copies of a less-than-ideal Out of Sight 4k means they get to keep releasing Helmut Käutner and Reginald Denny films on Blu-Ray, I say great!

I have no problem with KL's strategy, and due to the wide and eclectic net they cast, some of their releases have been way more left-field and exciting than Criterion's as of late. I'm just saying their track record and modus operandi has proven to exclude collaborators and so it's unsurprising that Soderbergh wasn't aware of the Out of Sight 4K, which is a shame because maybe he could have overseen/supervised the transfer. Though at least I feel less bad about finally buying the old mediocre blu a week before the KL UHD was announced..

By the way, the Out of Sight UHD release is pretty nice looking. Watched it last night, would say it's definitely more two dimensional than most transfers you see that have a lot of HDR popping out, grain reduction, etc - this looks like a straight-up 35mm print with a ton of grain in those blown out daytime shots - but that suits the film well.

Damn, might have to spring for it after all, just went and looked at caps comparing to the Universal blu which is night-and-day different even just regarding the color palette (the UHD is much closer than the golden coat I remember from seeing the film on VHS/TV)

The Kino UHD reflects the film as I saw it theatrically in 1998. The Universal BD is missing the red filters from the truck scenes and the blue filters from the Detroit scenes, for starters. Adding it as a reference UHD in the relevant thread.

Looks like The Limey might be getting a UHD release from Lionsgate.. Unfortunately it is a Steelbook, which probably means it will be a Best Buy exclusive.

You're right, Best Buy exclusive steelbook coming out on Oct 11

I don’t think BB US ships outside of America, and the Canadian wing of the company is so shit and has pretty much evaporated most of their physical media, it’s all but guaranteed they aren’t going to stock this.

Can someone tell me if these BB exclusives are a limited window, and will be more widely available later on?

It the Ran 4K release is anything to go by, then this will most likely be a limited release. Hopefully someone like Diabolik or Orbit will have some copies in stock.

nice brief interview with him and George Clooney before a screening of Ocean’s Eleven.

That's a nice interview (and only confirms that Batman & Robin followed up by Out of Sight were probably the two best things that happened to George Clooney, one giving him material to self deprecate about for decades later and the other an immediate escape from being caught in the black hole of that film's failure!) although I was rather disappointed that nobody mentioned the remake of Solaris at all, especially given that it has just passed its 20th anniversary. The Tarkovsky adaptation is unique (and uniquely weird) but I think the Soderbergh take on the material was extremely well handled as well.
