Bergman-Rossellini Set
Of these possibilities, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Oshimas went Eclipse (and I'm assuming you're not including Night and Fog in Japan in this dubious 'trilogy', since it has little in common with the preceding films stylistically or thematically) and a couple get bumped to 2013 or beyond. Bergman-Rossellini would be a colossal restoration / rights / version rationalization chore and will be a long way off, I expect.

That would still be a heavy year for box sets, but considering how light 2011 was, it's conceivable. After all, we got six new box sets last year.
I think the reason this year was scarce when it came to box-sets was because of the huge demand of blu-ray, causing them to release every new title on the format after late 2010. It may have made them push back quite a few boxsets down the schedule and could make sense of a huge influx come 2012.. I don't have anyway to prove this... Just a thought.

I'm sure it was something like that. And I think another factor was the massive drain of delivering the BBS set right at the end of 2010. I'm betting that a lot of other stuff got put on the back burner when that turned out to be such a huge task.

I hope we'll get The Samurai Trilogy next year. Surely can't be far off.

Any chance of seeing The Thief of Bagdad (1940) and The Naked Prey (1966) on Blu?

I asked about the latter and Mulvaney said there were not any plans for an upgrade right now. Which is a huge shame, as it is one of the more gorgeous-looking films in the collection.

Does anyone know who holds the rights to 'Alfredo, Alfredo'?

I've never seen the film personally. In fact, I have never seen it available on dvd at all.

Seeing that it has one of Hoffman's earlier performances and it's a Pietro Germi film, I would have expected it would have been released by someone at this point.

zedz wrote:Maybe more exciting is the new 35mm print of Four Nights of a Dreamer. Not that it's Bresson's greatest film, but it's one of his more elusive ones.
Frankly, it would struggle to make most people's top ten Bressons, and he only made thirteen features - but it's pretty much unique in his output for its winning charm, its sweet-naturedness and even a handful of actual jokes. I saw it in a double bill with Les affaires publiques (and how glad am I that I made that particular effort?), and I think they scored more genuine laughs than in the whole of the rest of the NFT's Bresson retrospective put together.

MichaelB -- from your description, 4 Nights of a Dreamer might actually be a Bresson film I would _like_.

Hopefully a false alarm, but this was posted on Facebook about an hour ago:
I sent Mulvaney an email asking about a possible physical release for Clair's I Married A Witch (which is on Hulu), he said they have no plans of releasing it outside of Hulu at the moment.
If true, this is absurd.

Isn't it one of their most watched films on Hulu? That is insane if true. I can't imagine they have too many titles that would sell better.

All I'd take from that is that it won't be coming out anytime during the next six months or so.

Note the winking emoticon and the hammy "just leaked" with 3 exclamation points. Many of these were listed on that 2012 preview pic or hinted at elsewhere and will probably come out in the next 16 months, but you really think they're obtained the rights to a whole box of "blockbuster hits of the 70s?"

Yeah, it would have been too good to be true. Have there been any Hideo Gosha hints in the last few months?

Fuck yeah.

Film Forum announcing a comprehensive Bresson retro. Including a Janus print of A MAN ESCAPED. I'm trying not to get my hopes up about the rest of the Bresson catalog getting a CC (or any decent) release. But a Color Bresson box would kind of make my year.

The supplements on the existing Bresson discs have been very thin, so an Eclipse set wouldn't surprise me. But I'll be very pissed if after all these years all I get is windowboxed DVDs of Four Nights of a Dreamer and a bunch of films I already own.

hey, criterion released Bigger Than Life, so why don't they release Pleasantville? I mean, they're about equally worthless, really, so why not?

When it comes to my opinion, they could just scratch Maria Braun out of the Trilogy and include Querelle as the third BD (if anybody is still moaning about a Maria Braun exclusion, they could add a VHS tape or a dvr or something) - even though I have a rather hateful relationship with Querelle, it IS an interesting work, and one mishandled drastically on DVD (not to mention a dir-cut exists somewhere on VHS and all the original negatives are in good shape so a reconstruction would be manageable).
