I truly hope that they include the It Is Wonderful To Create episodes for Rashomon, Throne of Blood, Hidden Fortress, and Red Beard on the Seven Samurai re-release. I have not seen how the Bergman intros were set up, but did they include non-Criterion Bergmans? Because I was thinking, would Criterion have the rights to air It Is Wonderful To Create episodes for Dersu Uzala, Dreams, Rhapsody in August, and Madadayo? God, I hope so![/i]

The "Looking back at 2005" newsletter (which just arrived in my mailbox) states:
"We also brought out more classics from the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu, Jean Renoir, and François Truffaut, to name but a few."
They haven't released any Ozu since July 2004 (EARLY SUMMER). There was nothing in 2005. FLOATING WEEDS was April 2004.

I wish they'd released some, but they seem to think they have!

Someone probably thinks that Ugetsu is an Ozu film. Probably the same person who did the Viridiana cover. Poor lass! #-o

We hope you enjoyed this year's many Ozu releases as we are sure you will enjoy all the coming Naruse releases in 2006.

Sigh!

At least Panorama has been plugging away at Ozu. And a Panorama DVD today is better than a Criterion one in 10 or so years.

...and the introduction of the true masters of the Japanese New Wave like Oshima and Yoshida.

Thank you, Criterion!

Have I missed something? There's been no January newsletter. Was the Looking back at 2005 thing from a month ago in lieu of it?

I really enjoyed Michael Barker's selections this month - interesting (and quite heartening) to know Criterion are so chummy with Sony Picture Classics.

Is anyone else confused as to why Criterion still hasn't announced their April releases?

All that talk about Cronenberg and no hint that there's more of him to come in the Collection (Crash?) doesn't bode well.

Neither does mention of only ONE Ozu title.

I have a feeling that Criterion is going back to the three month method of announcments, due to it being more reliable. About a third of the films announced 4 months in advance have been postponed for one reason or another. Causing frustration with it's customers, like us.

Criterion could be putting in a good word for New Line's A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE in hopes of getting the rights to Crash. Or, could Criterion release a double of both VIOLENCE (SE) and CRASH in the upcoming months?

I also thought that History of Violence might be a potential release in light of the mention in the newsletter. I don't see it as a double release with Crash though. Very, very different movies.

WOOHOO! Late Spring is coming in '06! I'm assuming everyone got this Buddha thing in their newsletter with the little quote:

We can all rest a little easier.

I was thinking more 2 in the same month than a boxset. I actually find them rather similar in terms of the themes.

Still we have to remember that New Line is part of Time Warner or whatever it is called this days and like WB Home Video, they don't license film to third parties anymore
