It doesn't seem to me that the costs are so prohibitive that some funding couldn't be found to be able to view these unseen films.

I have experience obtaining grants, and a few thousand dollars is not that hard to find.

I was doing the research for a Sight & Sound feature. You don't get grants for that kind of thing, especially as the Archive is only legally allowed to make the titles available to me as the legitimate researcher.

So what's in it for the purveyor of the grant?

Oh my so sorry to hear about this happening. Was lucky enough to see a few of the films shown during this current 70mm Lincoln Center run. They're always pretty on top of everything as far as I know.
