I suppose the breakdown doesn't even have to be fully one or the other, i.e. the sob stories about his past and conscience are a ploy, but the desperate desire and pleas to see his newborn son are sincere. It's that crack in the exterior, that kernel of humanity that I think is important for Panahi or that he might feel he needs.
I don't think a movie so formally concerned with offscreen space and obstructed views is telling us that anything is plainly revealed here.
I saw what zedz did: A torturer uses the tools in his box. Whatever mix of truth and fiction gets the desired result.

Good point, diamonds: it's still a 'loss' for Peg Leg whichever way you look at it.

I liked this a lot, but was confused about the setting. Why go out of your way to put unveiled female extras in a half dozen different shots in public places throughout the film? Early on I thought this must be some Iranian exile community; but then it became clear that it is definitely set in Tehran.

He discussed this in at least a few of his Q&A's, but
this is reflective of what's going on in Iran right now:
Jafar Panahi wrote:No one can give you words of advice. I only know my country; I don’t know [the United States]. I can only see the signs in your country. When a journalist comes to speak with me and in certain places brings their voice down because they’re afraid of eavesdropping or they’re afraid of tapping, we have seen those signs in our own country and we know where it’s going to lead to. I said this in my acceptance speech at TIFF. I said that I’m worried about the signs that I’m seeing. And I’m not seeing this only in the United States. I’m seeing it in many other places; it is only that it is unbelievable, unexpected in the United States.
I don’t know what the solution is. I think in our own country, we’re fighting against it. Our people, especially women, have found the way. Three years ago when the Women, Life, Freedom movement happened, it was a complete breakthrough and the history of Iran divided into before and after that movement. Women came out, they got beaten up, but they still put their scarves on fire. They burned their scarves. They shot many directly in the eye and they blinded them intentionally. And yet the next day, we saw the same women were out fighting on the street. And now you see a lot of women on the streets not wearing the hijab. It’s not that there has been a change by the government at all. You asked me for solutions or words of advice, and I really don’t know the situation here. You know the words of advice or the solutions here. We can only warn you about the signs we see and their consequences.

Watched this last night and was really taken with it. However, I wanted to know a little bit of the historical table-setting for the context of the film. Apparently, Vahid is Azarbaijani and I assume most of his assembled cohort throughout the film are as well. At first, I assumed they were Shah-loving Iranians against the '79 Islamic Revolution, but they are far too young for that reading. I know of a little ethnic strife between the Iranians and the Azaris in the north, but nothing too specific. Can anyone offer any information on the background of the characters and if the film is referring to a specific incident and political struggle? Vahid mentions his wife was taken in the original incident, so that tells me due to his age, that this original campaign against our main characters probably happened in the 21st century.

In this Palme d’Or winner from the Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi, a chance encounter sets in motion an urgent moral thriller. When a stranded driver (Ebrahim Azizi) walks into his shop, mechanic Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri) believes he has come face-to-face with Eghbal, a notoriously brutal guard who tortured him during his political imprisonment. Gathering a band of fellow former inmates and other allies, Vahid sets out to take justice into his own hands—but does he have the right man? Shot in secret after Panahi’s longtime ban from filmmaking in his home country, It Was Just an Accident is a tour de force of sustained tension and mordant humor, provocatively shifting perspectives to examine vital questions of trauma and revenge.

Nice to see this one coming out so soon after release (and on UHD). The only disappointment is that they don't add some historical context bonus giving people an overview of the history (esp. US involvement) from Mosaddegh to the present.

Great film. Will be grabbing. Not fond of that cover though.
