Two things about this film: (1) the overripe, autumnal cinematography might be the most beautiful I've ever seen; (2) my mom attests to the novel on which this was based being very popular and a bit scandalous, even by the early 1950s. She remembers a neighbor sneaking the book out on their summer vacation and reading passages out loud to the other girls, and then all of them getting in trouble when a parent found out.
