This is edited on FCP, so it's probably a special feature where the aspect ratio is not important.

They wouldn't scan and pan an extra feature these days. I would imagine the movie has that aspect ratio.

The fashions are indian saris, and the colors of the indian flag are on the columns of the building.

Well I haven't seen the image in question, but if the shot is clearly, incontrovertibly Indian, the only thing we can say for certain is that it's not by Satyajit Ray. Monsoon Wedding re-re-release?

Perhaps it's three hours of this.

Mother India, maybe?

I'm quite positive it's not The River but I'd have to revisit the film to know for sure. I'm leaning towards Darjeeling, maybe a documentary to appear on the disc, but the AR is throwing me off.

Maybe they're editing/transferring it in open matte to correct the aspect ratio later?

#-o

I still don't think it's DL though, unless its a short film Anderson was inspired by. That is the only special feature I could see them doing colour correction for. All the behind the scenes footage was shot in HD if I recall.

My wife's favorite Criterion film is the River, and we just watched it recently and unless they found a pristine print I can't imagine it looking remotely that vivid...let alone not recognizing the scene. I am almost certain that it's not The River (though how wonderful would it be to have that on blu?!?!)

Interesting though...the subcontinent is certainly a gaping hole in the collection.

Any chance that's from Powaqqatsi?

Ah, don't have the disc in-hand. Someone check, please. Would be nice for (finally) some confirmation that they're actually at work on these.

I'd just assumed it was a Darjeeling Limited extra.

Guys, it's pretty obviously Shanghai Express. It's just been so long since it was promised that we all kinda forgot what it looked like

Just saw this in theaters a few weeks ago and don't remember anything resembling this still as it takes place in modern Tehran and follows a group of young hipsters. Also, it's 1.85:1 if I remember correctly. Great movie though and would definitely grab it on Blu.

Someone on Facebook identified video layers visible in FCP, so it's probably a documentary created in house for another film.

Still, I'm guessing they wouldn't post a completely irrelevant screen shot, and a modern doc (e.g. for DL) would not use any 4:3 footage. If I had to guess I still contend that it is a scene from the film in question, being inserted into an in-house doc.

Criterion are not releasing The Killer Inside Me. MPI has preorders for both the dvd and blu with a street date of Sept.28 on Amazon.

These might be barebones releases, with a Criterion release to follow next year a la Che, though... right?

MPI never released barebone editions of Che. I think you are thinking of the blockbuster discs which were for rental only.

Well I wasn't referring to MPI specifically, I just could've sworn that IFC has done this in the past with... Magnolia was it? Who put out Che discs? Or am I still wrong? Eh, whatever.

Maybe you're thinking of the E1/Koch versions from Canada?

Makes sense that it's some kind of supplement. Looking at the large version of the picture, isn't the last person on the right a man wearing Western-style clothing? Looks like khakis and a sweater over the shoulders. Could be Anderson. Also, what's going on with the two figures(?) in the background, on the porch of the building. Looks like a man in a blue shirt spanking a man in yellow pants!

FWIW, only have the Darjeeling Limitied trailer handy to check, but those same costumes resemble ones found in a small snippet of the trailer that takes place in a somewhat crowded street scene. Same costumes, slightly different context. So probably is one of the supplements.

There were bare bones Blockbuster exclusives in the US for Che, but I can't recall who distributed them. They were only available at Blockbuster as far as I recall.

Yeah, pretty sure it's a Darjeeling Limited supplement:

Yeah, IFC has/had a few titles that were/are Blockbuster exclusives (Breillat's Une vielle maitresse springs to mind, and I'm sure Criterion are getting to that eventually).
