Blockbuster got 'exclusives' of barebones versions of some of the IFC movies Criterion also released- it might be a comparable situation.

He was working on a new cut of Mimic, but not with Criterion. The upcoming Lionsgate release is a new director's cut with a bevy of special features.

This is very confusing given that the running time is listed as 95 minutes (a half-hour shorter than the international release), and the description promises "51 minutes of previously-unseen footage". I think we can dismiss the running time as inaccurate, but does this release only contain the 173 min. "director's cut", the version generally regarded as weaker than the 123 min. international cut? Also, since the "director's cut" has been released before on DVD, those extra 51 minutes are not exactly "previously-unseen", right?

I thought this was a Weinstein title. When does it bounce back to Miramax?

Another half baked Blu-ray release, I'll stick with the 4-disc Arrow DVD set I think.

Yeah, I'm still happy with the 3-disc US set from a few years ago that I got for very cheap. Seems like no one can so far top the DVD releases of this film...

I still have the Alliance DVD, which is one of the worst DVDs I own (never got around to getting the set) so I'll consider it but would hope it would contain both versions. Saw the longer version and wasn't overly fond of it.

If that PG rating is correct, I would think it would be the shorter version. Wasn't the longer version rated R?

The Digital Fix states that the upcoming Lionsgate "Cinema Paradiso" is the theatrical cut only

So, the 51 minutes of "never-before-seen" footage is the additional material excised from the "Director's Cut" version and included here as a bonus extra?

Cider House Rules, Life is Beautiful, and... Dead Alive (Braindead) Blus on October 4!

EDIT: Wait, it's the fucking R rated cut of Dead Alive?! Why in the world would they do that when they released the unrated cut on DVD? Oh well, nevermind then

A few months ago, over at the Home Theater Forum's Shout Factory thread, Cliff Mac said he was talking to Wingnut about Dead Alive because Lionsgate's rights were expiring. I don't know if this upcoming Blu-ray is a sign they've renewed them or a sign that they are rushing a product out there before they lose the film.

The uncut version is 104 minutes, the Lion's Gate "unrated" version was 97 minutes, and the R-rated version is 85 minutes. So, if they do release the R-rated version, people will be missing out on about 20 minutes of zombie slaughter, in a film about slaughtering zombies.

I'd imagine we would get a Peter Jackson approved Blu-Ray of Dead Alive at some point. Myself, I hope we finally get that special edition Meet the Feebles, my favorite Jackson film.

That's strange... I thought the original aspect ratio for this film was 1.66:1.

Any word on the forthcoming Cinema Paradiso BR? I don't have high hopes, but as long as it has the theatrical cut and it looks good, I'll probably get it...

No offense to Shout!, but they do an absolutely horrible job of film restoration and up-conversion when it pertains to their Blu-ray releases. I'd much rather see a company that's concerned about video quality put out something like Dead Alive.

Because Lionsgate has such a good track record.

Watch the Audition or The Stepfather Blu-rays and tell me with a straight face that Lionsgate couldn't put out a better DVD edition, let alone Blu-ray

I've seen similar quality from Shout though (just look at the Corman films). Both companies have done some great and some terrible work.

Lionsgate did put out a DVD of Audition and it was a terrible PAL to NTSC conversion. It was really unwatchable.

Where has it been confirmed that it is the R rated cut? I haven't seen that.
