Update from Milestone Films:
"our restoration of SADIE THOMPSON will be premiering at Le Giornate del Cinema Muto in October!"

Aug. 26, 2026 update from Milestone Films:

"The last reel is still missing despite a new FIAF search done. It will be a 4K digital transfer from an earlier negative with much cleanup and scratch removal. It won't be perfect because of the nitrate damage, but it will look significantly better. Much like Queen Kelly."

Cyankali, Tintner, Germany 1930, 2K DCP; web browser translation:
"World premiere of the digitally restored version, which is based on the original 35 mm image negative and the original 35 mm optical negative (both nitrate). The image negative has gaps, caused by admission-related cuts and edits of the film in the course of its archive history. In terms of sound, four of the original ten roles are missing, which could not be supplemented despite intensive research. The digitization was funded by the Film Heritage Funding Program (FFE). The missing musical passages will be set to music live by cellist Paul Rittel during the performance."

A 2016 DVD with, according to Google AI, an older Filmmuseum Potsdam restoration; the DVD is 4:3 with image stretched (to 16:9?) according to a customer review:

https://www.filmmuseum-potsdam.de/DVD-C ... -1977.html

Il giardino dei Finzi Contini, 4K:
"The restoration in 4K resolution was carried out by the company Omnimago using the scan of the original negative material from Italy. This was supplemented by corresponding film material from the archives of German television stations to compensate for some minor sound errors in the original material. A new color correction was necessary to restore the optics. The digitization was funded by the Film Heritage Funding Program (FFE)."

Понеделник сутрин (Ponedelnik sutrin), Bulgaria 1966, Director: Irina Aktasheva, Hristo Piskov, 4K:
"banned shortly after completion and its release was prevented for over two decades, until 1988."
"restored in 2025 using the camera negative in 4K, with missing and damaged sections reconstructed using a duplicate negative."
https://www.deutsche-kinemathek.de/de/b ... taurierung

Winter Kept Us Warm, Canada 1965, David Secter, 4K:
"In 2025, the film was scanned and restored by Canadian International Pictures using the original 16mm A/B camera negatives in 4K resolution, with audio taken from the zero copy. The restoration was funded by Telefilm Canada."

4K remaster of MIAMI VICE, introducing a new Director's Final Cut, is premiering at Beyond Fest. Guess we now know why Shout pulled it after their initial listing.

https://www.americancinematheque.com/no ... 0-03-2026/

Bill Hunt has apparently confirmed Shout do still have it. Hopefully their release includes the Theatrical Cut as well, but if not, at least the 88 Films BD exists.

Die Gräfin von Monte Christo, 1932, FWMS restoration:
https://www.filmarchiv.at/de/kino/film/ ... X6WuBGea78

"this restoration was missing one sequence in the middle of the film, a sequence described in the censorship report /.../ in the collection of the Bundesarchiv, Berlin (more on this material in a future post!). /../ I finally got to see this very sequence in the Gosfilmofond copy. /.../ a few scenes in which the main characters arrive at snowbound Semmering and bluff their way into a hotel."

Interesting info on a print of Alraune, Richard Oswald 1929, at Gosfilmofond:
"Though this was a shorter print, it boasted a fragment of material that was missing from the DFF restoration. In the latter, the credit sequence is entirely absent – so a digital substitute is provided. But in the Gosfilmofond copy, we see the original German title card announcing “Alraune”. After this striking visual introduction, the screen goes black and a voice announces: “In Richard Oswalds ‘Alraune’ – mit Albert Bassermann, Harald Paulsen, und Agnes Straud. Ein Richard Oswald film der Ufa.”

L'Eclisse allegedly received a new restoration recently, according to someone on the other forum, but I see no mention of it anywhere on the internet. Maybe it's a similar situation to A Woman Under the Influence: "He said they said she said there's a new restoration somewhere..."?

Film restoration info for German films can sometimes be found at www.filmportal.de
Search for a film, on the film page, look screen right for a link "Filmanfang" (Start of film), leading to a Vimeo player showing the first minutes of the film, often with restoration info on text screens.

The film page sometimes has links, screen right, to PDF documents about censorship ("Zensur") and other subjects; example:
https://www.filmportal.de/film/alraune_ ... 6f045e03ca
See Zensurentscheidung vom 20.01.1928 for info about censor-mandated film cuts in Galeen´s Alraune.
