Wow; and here I was waiting for the version that Cult Epics was supposedly working on. It's funny how many companies have announced this title as forthcoming without it ever actually getting a release on home video: Cult Epics, Subversive, even Criterion mentioned it when they had it pegged for their cult film label that never panned out. Here's hoping that Synapse finally breaks that trend.
That cult film label was always called Eclipse

A years-in-the-making restoration of an underground-cinema classic is finally ready to be unleashed on an unsuspecting public. Read on for the complete info and first look at cover art for Synapse Films’ THUNDERCRACK!
Directed, photographed and edited by Curt McDowell and scripted by George Kuchar, both heroes of the independent film scene, 1975’s THUNDERCRACK! is described as “the world’s only underground kinky art adult horror film, complete with four men, three women and rampaging circus animals. With the initial setup of an atmospheric gothic tale—a dark and stormy night breakdown featuring a creepy old house on the hill—it quickly turns into an eerie orgy of graphic humor, horror and sex.” Synapse has restored the movie in high definition for its first official North American home video release December 8 on region-free Blu-ray and DVD, presented in the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Both editions will include rare archival interview segments with McDowell on a second audio commentary track, and the two-disc Blu-ray release will also include IT CAME FROM KUCHAR, Jennifer Kroot’s definitive 87-minute documentary on George and his filmmaking twin brother Mike, plus a bonus DVD featuring:

And more. Retail prices are $39.95 for the Blu-ray set and $29.95 for the DVD.

As one who was at the west coast premiere in 1975, and casually followed Thundercrack!'s fortunes through the years while looking forward to a decent home video release, I am positively ecstatic with the purchase.

I haven't gotten my copy yet (I'm hoping to get it as a Christmas present) but I'm thrilled about the inclusion of five (!) of McDowell's short films, including Confessions, Loads, and Boggy Depot. (I wish they had gotten the hilarious A Visit to Indiana, too, but I really shouldn't complain.) The fact that Thundercrack! is on Blu-ray at all, and in its uncut glory no less, is a Christmas miracle.

Received Thundercrack! in the mail last night, and all I can say is wow! I am amazed at how good the film looks on Blu-ray, especially considering its history. Curt McDowell was visionary genius of sorts, and when you throw in laugh-out-loud dialogue by George Kuchar it's something to treasure. That and the copious special features make this edition one of the very top releases of the year. Synapse, you rock!

Mine's on its way, and I can't wait. I saw the notorious Scala Cinema version twice, but the combination of a well-worn print and their notorious 16mm sound system meant that everyone was going "mmmpthfhth fhththfhmfht sphthfhthfhfh" even when their mouths weren't full. It must be at least 25 years ago my then boss assured me that the dialogue was hysterical, and I'm finally going to find out why.

Synapse has done a beautiful job, um, mounting Thundercrack!. The film by itself would be a must-buy even without the wealth of extras and supplemental material. Curt McDowell's short films, which I've only ever seen in bootleg form, are essential viewing for anyone interested in camp and underground film, gay cinema, or vintage porn. I'm stunned that Loads has been included here. Thomas Waugh called it "so hot that it makes Kansas City Trucking Company feel like a three-hour Marguerite Duras film projected at half-speed." He goes on to say "it is also a lot more than that, though this 'more' amplifies the turn-on rather than legitimizes it." Bravo, Synapse.

Has anyone else had trouble playing the Thundercrack! blu on a PS3? Mine wouldn't even read the disc. I suppose it could be a problem with my PS3 (it is a few years old), but this is the first disc I've ever had trouble with, and I haven't had any problems with subsequent discs. I tried Thundercrack! on another player and, fortunately, it works without issue.
