Seems like, Mann-wise, Paramount also owns Dr. Broadway, Strategic Air Command, and The Tin Star (the latter already on DVD); would the first two plus The Furies really an Eclipse set make? I know that there was discussion about this in the newsletter thread (and that this would be more appropriate on the Eclipse random speculation page), so I won't post any more about it here. I just don't remember anyone else mentioning the other Mann titles Paramount owns.

I would really, really like to see an Eclipse box of some of Santosh Sivan’s films—the ones with songs and dances, of course. And Criterion would be really dumb not to license
Asoka (2001) from
First Look. It’s current DVD is among the worst I’ve ever seen. Subtitles notwithstanding, which are excellent and more or less punctuated properly, the picture quality has those awful PAL to NTSC artifacts and are pitched a semitone too high from the original. The stereo mix overmodulates to death, and the title card that says Interval in the middle of the film is missing. The special features are decent, too, but Criterion would definitely do a better job with the picture and sound of the actual film, and would restore whatever’s been lost from the theatrical version. This film is important because it was the first major Bollywood film to secure US distribution. What do you think? Peace.

Will never ever happen

I doubt it will ever happen but I really need a Radley Metzger box set, the past DVD releases of his films were an abomination.

But it must include the Henry Paris films.

Don't enough twenty-somethings have nightmares about this film as it is without disturbing a whole new generation?

Not to get the discussion too far off track, but do that many people really have a fear of
Peanut Butter? I always thought my (twenty-something, natch) sister was the only one.

It's pretty late in the day, I guess we're not getting new titles this afternoon

It usually happens between 5 and 6... sometimes earlier, sometimes later. Its Presidents day weekend, so nobody would be back to work until the 18th, which is usually pretty late. Who knows, though.

It can happen as late as 7 or even 8.

I'm willing to venture that they're not going to announce the new titles today (seeing as it's 8:30pm in NYC).

It's going to be really funny Tuesday morning when after waiting all weekend it's revealed that all we're getting in May is Salo reissue and Before the Rain

Which would mean it's the best month since January....

The inclusion of Salo would certainly do wonders to make up for any major disappointments, but another low-output month with just a few lower tier titles would be sad indeed. Optimistically though, this will be the first month in a while with announcements made so late in the month, so hopefully that means that the delays are in response to an unusually high workload.

Okay, I was pretty much ironic in that post above, but honestly, a new version of "Salo" with hopefully lots of extra material (absolutely necessary for this film, so I hope for a 2-discer) would make my day. I also strongly suspect that we will see "The Thief of Baghdad" in May, and while I don't necessarily see me double-dipping, any additional Powell (and I see this basically as a Powell film) is a grace for the collection.

I'm hoping for that Ophüls set.

I was thinking this morning, with the anniversary of May '68, now is the time to release the Gorin set-- could actually manage to catch a bit of publicity from reviewers who might not ordinarily give it much column space.

Perhaps a bit of a stretch, what with the remake getting released soon, but I'd love to see Criterion tackle the original Sleuth. Anchor Bay, I think, released the original DVD.

That would be a terrific addition and there could be so many wonderful extras for Mankiewicz and the two stars. It's a Fox film and the recent update certainly didn't drum up much competition so I don't think it's as crazy an idea as some suggestions

Is Michael Caine in the collection already, or would that be his first?
