The Universe has tried to fuck me again, but I have persevered! Just this last week I bought Delicatessen for some outrageous price (even after the 20% discount) and just a DAY later the new edition was announced. I had been planning to buy The New World, too, within the next couple of days, so thank god.
I still haven't seen it, though, so I'll be renting it sometime between now and October.

It's difficult for me to talk about Malick without drowning in hyperbole, but to keep it simple: I'm looking forward to the bliss lasting just 30 minutes longer.GringoTex wrote:I'm a big New World fan, so I have to ask: what was missing from the theatrical version? More shots of grass blowing in the wind? More indians raising their faces to the sky? More dolly water shots? What is it exactly you guys are looking forward to?

I am glad that the extended cut is being actually released (pretty shocking to me actually). I still haven't got myself to watch the normal cut on my 30 inch TV because of how my feelings were after seeing it on the big screen and how I like to look back on it thinking about it in the theater. Now I can watch this version without thinking about that since it is a different cut. Well, that is how I rationalize it at least.

I have a friend who saw the film in France (on the biggest screen in the country!) and he said that most of the people who went and saw it thought it sucked because they wanted to see a big action movie (something like Brotherhood of the Wolf, I imagine). Most, if not all, of the advertising material for the film really didn't do an accurate job... it either looked like a cheesy period romance film or a crappy historical epic.
Why couldn't they just give this thing a nice minimal cover? something like the map from the opening credits... that would make sense.

I'VE BEEN PRAYING FOR A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE FOR EONS! =D>Kilcher was born in Schweigmatt, Germany; she speaks English, a little German and limited Algonquian (which she learned for her part in The New World). Her name means "Golden Eagle". Her father is a Peruvian artist of Quechua / Huachipaeri descent. Her mother, Saskia Kilcher, a human-rights activist of Swiss descent, was born in Alaska and raised in Switzerland. Kilcher's maternal grandfather was Ray 'Pirate' Genet, a famous Alaskan mountaineer. She is the cousin of singer Jewel Kilcher.

I vaguely remember Lubezki mentioning that the opening sequence of the film originally lasted over 10 minutes (he had mentioned that the underwater footage was stunning, or something along those lines)...Does anybody have any recollection of this? It'd be nice to see it as part of the new extended cut.

It's not a bad review, but I almost want to link to it in the "Rediculous" thread for these lines:ivuernis wrote:DVDTalk review of Extended Cut
"Malick's a prosaic visual director, and if it takes him double-digit year spans to construct films with as much brevity and poise as The New World, then let's not rush the man between these gaps."
