The big news was clearly A Special Day, because it has the word "Special" in it

I'm surprised they didn't add that Franco re-edit to the van Sant.

a criterion month with Lynch, Cronenberg, and Van Sant has to be an all time low for me. can't stand any of those three

Kwaidan is great news and the italian movie looks like it's worth checking out

I'm a bit confused about their Kwaidan announcement. It says "New 2K digital restoration of director Masaki Kobayashi’s original cut, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray", but then it still says "161 minutes" under runtime. I'm hoping this is just a detail they missed on the web page and that it is in fact the 183 minute version.

The description explicitly says it's the original 3-hour cut, I'm sure the 161 minute runtime is just leftover from the last release.

I believe criterion has been in the past pretty adamant that the shorter cut is the director's cut.

The description says "This version of Kwaidan is the original three-hour cut, never before released in the United States." so I'd bet on this being the longer version.

Wait, I'm confused -- didn't Criterion say there was going to be a "big" announcement today?

I mean, I love Mulholland Dr. as much as the next person, but it's not exactly this is a surprise, or "big" in the way that that word hints at.

They're also touting it on their front page as "available for the first time in its original three-hour cut."

Big here means very highly requested and will make them more money for them in a week than A Special Day will in the entire time it is in print.

People have been clamoring for Lynch's films to be added to the collection for years and years and years, and now that they're being added, those same folks are shrugging it off? Fuck that - it's about as big an announcement as I could ask for, whether Criterion have hinted at it or not.

Yeah, I think Mulholland Drive is pretty huge. No complaints here. It's always at the top of the best films of the 2000's lists.

Still not a single one of those this year, unless you count the Gregory/Shawn repackage.

While they might release another one in December, it is looking like The Apu Trilogy in Nvember is going to be the only true box set this year. A far cry from 2013 where they released five box sets (Pierre Etaix, 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman, John Cassavetes: Five Films, Zatoichi The Blind Swordsman, and Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project Volume 1)

what if they did multiple boxsets in Nov/Dec? no way it happens but that would really be something.

Sheesh, it's now been more than a year and half since they announced a silent film for the main line.
