Why would that be "anal" of you? Do whatever you feel is necessary and nobody will judge you because of it. The artwork featured on the regular edition is excellent and completely worth the price.

Does anyone know the tentative release date for the upcoming Mondo Vision "On The Silver Globe" DVD?

I don't know the definite release date for Na Srebrnym Globie, but on a Facebook page dedicated to Zulawski somebody had been in touch with Mondo Vision who were - then - shooting for late 2010/early 2011. This was prior to the release of Szamanka, and since that film was two and half months behind schedule, it seems plausible that the same lag will affect the release of Na Srebrnym Globie. In any case, this film getting the red-carpet treatment is exciting beyond words!
My Silver Globe-wish list, on top of the usual LE-extras:
* The "Twarde Ladowanie"-documentary mentioned by eltopo.
* Subtitles that strike a balance between the complexity of the dialogue and readability. My only gripe with previous Mondo releases have been segments where the subtitles just flash across the screen, and given the tone and rapidity of the dialogue in Na Srebrnym Globie, cramming in too much text could make it impossible to follow (a daunting task in any case!).
* The amazingly weird English dub (must be heard to be believed).
* A thorough article from David Mackenzie on the restoration of this film.
* Of course, an edition including the Moon Trilogy in print would be fantastic, although it would probably up the price quite substantially.

The WHAT? I didn't know such a thing existed. Where did you hear it?
I'm not sure when Mondo Vision plans to release this (usual disclaimer: they're OK with me giving some information on the project, but they have to announce solid release details themselves). What I can tell you is that the subtitles are receiving special attention for the reason you say. There is a lot of dialogue to take in. And, there will definitely be some news from Mondo Vision (in general) quite soon, I think.
Of course, there will be some extras for Silver Globe. Can't say what yet!

Good to hear that project is moving along, and thanks for the great job on Szamanka!
Back when I was first hunting for Na Srebrnym Globie (late 90's/early 00's) I got hold of the dubbed version twice, first on VHS via eBay, and later on from superhappyfun.com (who seem to have have gone out of business). Anyway, it's a one person voice-over by a (presumably) Polish guy with a slight accent and an emotionless, almost robotic, delivery. It's quite a strange experience to hear his flat reading of the dialogue while the actors scream their heads off on the background track! I have most of it transcribed in a notebook somewhere, since I planned to subtitle a non-dubbed version of the movie, but never got around to it (this was WAY before Mondo Vision appeared, of course. I never expected the film would get any recognition whatsoever). I have no idea where this version comes from, but I'm guessing it might have been shown during the Cannes-festival back in 1988.

Wow, an unfinished film, with segments describing the lost/unfilmed scenes, with a guy talking over the top. That's quite a few layers!

They are working on it. Soon but no date set yet. I am anxiously awaiting that one.
I'm completely amazed by the Mondo Vision releases. FINALLY! Zulawski gets the respect he deserves. What's your fave Zulawski film? I can't say as I'm still in the midst of viewing them all. He is surely becoming one of my all time fave directors. Also, I have an extra copy of each release. Let me know if anyone wants to buy/and-or trade! I need most of Bela Tarr's work. Cheers! henry

Mondo Vision removed it from their "films" section, however it is still listed in "future releases".
Can someone verify the status of this release?

That's odd.
The other month it was shown from a 35mm print (or the parts left of it) at the
Offscreen Festival in Brussels. Somehow boosted my confidence that everything regarding this release was right on track.

Update: "Silver Globe has been indefinitely postponed. The production and extras are almost complete but due to lack of budget we are unable to publish the film at this time. We are currently working on a new release of Possession for 2011. - Mondo Vision"

considering it's still listed on their coming soon page, I'd imagine at worst it's just taking them longer than expected.
I just hope they manage to make it through to POSSESSION & THIRD PART OF THE NIGHT and continue onwards to other filmmakers, and do not disappear into the aether like encore's Jean Rollin releases.
for such a small outfit, the work their doing on Zulawski's films is astounding
if only MV could tackle Tsai Ming-Liang next??? [-o<

That is sad news.
Possession is already available in high quality releases elsewhere, but a proper release of
Silver Globe is long overdue.

Well, at least you'd assume that POSSESSION'd be more likely to make money for Mondo Vision, to allow them to release Zulawski's other films. Glad to here Possession is coming though, will be nice to hopefully have a copy of the fantastic soundtrack, and all the extra love MV are showing these films

Work is still being done on Silver Globe, so don't worry. My understanding (confirmed from their statement above) is that the release order may change, but they will all come out eventually.

I hope so David, but it feels like everything on DVD now is a race against the demise of the format. Any way we can all get behind and push?

Mondo Vision's budgets go on making the product, not on promotion (the packaging is a particularly huge expense). Spreading the word on forums and user reviews would probably help.

I don't know how much the recent UK release of Possession will impact the sales of Mondo Vision's release, but it seems to be his most well known film in America by a wide margin, so I can only assume it will be the most visible release and thus the most important one in terms of brand visibility and profitability, etc. As such, hopefully people will promote Possession to the degree that they love all of the other upcoming films, because it will surely impact matters and the degree of their potential impact is at its peak with Possession. I might even lie and say it's my favorite Zulawski film

Judging by posts on other forums, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's skipped the Second Sight disc in order to hold out for the MV
uber-edition
Has anyone else here seen the 80-minute version as originally released in the States? It's a fascinating abomination to say the least...

no need for me to lie about Possession being my favourite Zulawski film. though I think it helps that it's in English, it makes it far easier to take in the acting, the dialogue and the visuals.
cannot wait to see Mondo's release. should be beautiful.
I think it's astounding the care and effort that's put into the Ltd edition versions of these releases. I don't know they're managing to survive, without the publicity to go along with them.
thanks for all the hard work, Mr Mackenzie, and of course to the rest of Mondo Vision

Arguing with DVD Beaver over image resolution was a bad marketing decision. It was right after "The Most Important Thing: Love" when Gary published the open letter and rejected later Mondo Vision releases such as "L'Amour Braque" & "Szamanka".
I'm not implying MV's potential sales lye solely with DVDB's push of the product but looking over the amount of titles sold through DVDB it seems logical that MV would want their catalog to receive exposure through this outlet.
Both parties should make amends in an effort to help promote the existing releases and subsequently speed up the production process of "On The Silver Globe".

I actually don't think that made much difference. These releases were always a "labour of love" for Mondo Vision (which is why they were so annoyed by the mis-representation and asked me to publicly comment on it as the tech guy). The point is to get these films released - not necessarily to drive huge sales. If the latter was their strategy, they would likely be releasing slimmed-down releases in normal packaging and promoting them whenever possible. I'm sure they could have sold double the number of "L'amour Braque" by promoting it as the film where the girl from Braveheart gets naked, but they seem to have a different strategy.
Even if it has little to do with sales for Mondo Vision, I would still love for all involved to make amends regarding the misrepresented screen captures - the fact that some of their screen grabs are blurred and others aren't is, in practice, pretty dodgy - even although it was done unknowingly. Sadly, I tried discussing the issue with them via private communication months before their technically inaccurate "open letter", and they refused to acknowledge their error.

It's also worth noting that the discs got rave reviews elsewhere - notably in Sight & Sound, which gave them several big plugs. In fact, I even namechecked Mondo Vision in my review of Second Sight's 'Possession' when I said something on the lines of not being quite up to Mondo Vision's labour-of-love efforts.
