Is there any difference in the on-disc content between the limited edition and the standard edition?

No, literally just a slipcase

To be more accurate, it's a rather handsome, thick envelope-type holder, with some collectible memorabilia inside (a postcard of a cow grazing, a piece of filmstrip)

Since yesterday I've received my copy of Satantango and the Pathé box set of La Roue, which miraculously made it all the way from France in one piece with only some minor wear to the outer case--two of my most wished-for upgrades for which I've been waiting years. Throw in the inauguration and I'd say the last 24 hours have been pretty great.

MichaelB wrote: Mon Jan 18, 2021 1:21 pm David M did indeed encode the Arbelos release, which is why I went for it despite the considerable extra expense. This stems from doing a side-by-side comparison of the Criterion and Eureka Shoah a few years ago and noting that the Eureka version was really noticeably better despite unavoidably having a similar bitrate.
This is true and posted about it on this forum. The Criterion Shoah had distracting artifacts, but once I went region-free, I picked up the MoC per this board's suggestion - BIG improvement. Luckily I was able to sell my Criterion BD for the same price I paid for it.

I just received Satantango via Amazon. The front of the case was cracked that caused a tear in the insert. The crack went through to the disc holder but disc wasn't damaged. I emailed Arbelos. I have a feeling they will not replace the the case and insert.

Let me know what they say- my case was damaged too, but haven't taken any action to reach out at this point

Sure, will do... They will probably tell me to contact Amazon. :(

Amazon will surely replace your copy, it'll be worth reaching out via chat though to ensure that they override the relatively new policy of not providing free packaging for returns (which itself seems to be implemented arbitrarily) if it doesn't qualify. However, I've had too many frustrating encounters with their chat service in the last six months to even bother anymore unless I feel it's absolutely necessary.

Definitely. Amazon's customer service has taken a big step back in my eyes. I have also been frustrated by them otherwise I would've gone ahead and reached out to them. Plus, I want to watch the film and not have to wait. If Arbelos replaces it then all is good and if not so be it.

As expected, Arbelos only replaces if I ordered through their store. They recommend I replace through Amazon.... I did scan through it. It looks pretty wonderful.

You'll have 30 days to return the discs to Amazon, so plenty of time to watch in the meantime (and your replacement would arrive sooner than that)

The wait is on. I watched Part 1 this afternoon...It looks quite good. Arbelos did a great job.

BTW... Amazon is showing my shipment running late and if I don't receive it by the 29th they will send me another. Ha.

Haven't seen it but his shorts are the MVP of the Gems of Hungarian Animation set, so very much looking forward to this!

The Hungarian FIlm Archive(?) had Janos on their Vimeo channel with English subs for a while a year or so ago so I can confirm it's awesome. It takes a folksy epic poem and turns it into a weird 60s/70s phantasmagoria, all bright colors and flowing forms, with a tripped-out transcendent ending. It was a conscious response to Yellow Submarine and surpasses that movie in just about every way. It's a high point of feature animation.

I can't say any of that is true about the cat-city mouse-superweapon cartoon spy war movie they have also restored, but I hope Arbelos releases that too.

Janos Vitez is excellent, I've always been a fan of late 60s/early 70s mixed with folklore (mostly in music) so of course it work pretty great on me. Feherlofia is still Marcell Jankovics' best feature film though.

Macskafogó though.... I got one or two laughs, that's it. And it isn't really pleasing to look at. It's more a case of a film that's cult localy but there's isn't much. There's Vuk that's another popular hungarian animated feature that also got a sequel in recent years. Even less worth it.

A title that may be worth it is Hugó, a víziló, which is kind of like Janos Vitez in it's animated psychedelia vibe.

I watched Satantango over three days. A part each day. Plus the supplements. It's a stunning looking bluray. I felt like I was rained on for three days. It's a palpable experience. The only minor issue I have is the supplements, which are good, could have been more. Perhaps a scholarly dissection of the film would have rounded this release, although there is an essay in the fold out pamphlet

I wonder if they'll stack Damnation a bit more given that they weren't able to here due to covid.

That's a pretty stunning release on paper - I didn't expect them to throw in János Vitéz as an extra, though it doesn't feel like a title with great commercial potential on its own either. They've priced it accordingly but I'm certainly giving them support by pre-ordering this.
