Interesting to see House of Strangers in the line-up. I haven't seen or heard much about the
Fox catalog since Disney acquired it.

I can’t imagine someone is remaking it (again) so indeed a bit of a left field project for them to okay. It doesn’t really seem like a movie Criterion would be interested in, so not sure what the end goal is here

Re: Recent Film Restorations
Sadly the best chance you'll see a Fox title mentioned is in this very thread nowadays. 4K restoration projects still go on with new titles (Spellbound & Lifeboat to name a few) announced in these festivals and retrospectives every year. But they don't appear on physical media is all.JSC wrote: Fri Jul 11, 2025 2:38 pm Interesting to see House of Strangers in the line-up. I haven't seen or heard much about the

I saw that, too. I couldn't tell if it's a *new* restoration of Pyaasa, or just a promotion of the one from 2015..Stefan Andersson wrote: Fri Jul 11, 2025 7:17 pm Guru Dutt films restored by Ultra Media & Entertainment Group:

Has there been any recent word on a restoration of Mi Vida Loca (1993)? Where is this movie?

With WB/HBO. No restoration yet, and the only 35mm print in circulation is Allison Anders’ that is held by the Academy Film Archivejmj713 wrote: Fri Jul 11, 2025 9:30 pm Has there been any recent word on a restoration of Mi Vida Loca (1993)? Where is this movie?

Restoration-related info from ClassicFlix founder David Kawas:
"the condition of Roach elements generally range from very poor to abysmal."
"As far as the Hal Roach library in general, I can summarize the state of it in one word: disaster. For the Silent Our Gang titles: disaster times 100. As such, it explains why no one else wishes to take on the library and do major restorations.
I'm grateful to private collectors who collected the films over the decades and who are willing to share their material, and to UCLA, LOC, etc. who were willing to take on many films in the Roach catalog and preserve them (with a HUGE thanks to Richard W. Bann for facilitating preservation of the surviving nitrate elements around 20 years ago)."

Re: Recent Film Restorations
From this year´s Cinecon festival:
"Modern Love (1929) - Comedian Charley Chase’s sound debut and the only extant Chase film not on home video!
Initially, it was thought that only about two reels of this late-silent, part-talkie Universal comedy survived. However, thanks to some private collectors, enough of the footage was found and utilized to create this restoration, which premiered in 2008."

Nice, looks like a restoration of Bava's Bay of Blood as well! That has been in much need of one.

Was there news of a 4K restoration for Rabid Dogs? Would love to see that get a 4K release.

Bay of Blood is a biggie. Right on the heels of that super lazy Shout boxset too. Curious if Shout is losing the rights or if Severin only has the UK rights.

I am shocked that that finally happened. Jackson was saying he was going to remaster his early films when he was doing media for the theatrical release of The Lovely Bones.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
As per a post on Nitrateville for the restoration of Beau Geste (1926)
Will be interesting to see which boutique releases thisIs the re-release of Beau Geste (1926) in theaters yet? Yes! The restored version premiered at the TCM Classic Film Festival on April 27, 2025, and is now being released theatrically across North America by Rialto Pictures. This restoration has been years in the making, involving a heroic collaboration between Paramount, multiple archives, and veteran film restorers. It even features a new score performed live by the Mont Alto Orchestra. If you're a fan of epic silent cinema, this is a rare treat.
Here are a few confirmed or likely venues based on past Rialto releases and silent film programming:
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) New York, NY Scheduled for Aug 1, 2025
Castro Theatre San Francisco, CA Likely (home of Silent Film Festival)
Music Box Theatre Chicago, IL Often hosts Rialto restorations
AFI Silver Theatre Silver Spring, MD Known for classic film series
Texas Theatre Dallas, TX Possible local screening.
Restoration runs approximately 101 minutes, drawn from multiple archival sources.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
The Castro is being renovated to primarily serve as a music venue and won't reopen until early 2026 at the earliest. The next SF Silent Film Festival is in November at the Orinda theater, so this will presumably screen there.FrauBlucher wrote: Sun Jul 27, 2025 4:42 pm Here are a few confirmed or likely venues based on past Rialto releases and silent film programming:

Re: Recent Film Restorations
Announcement of the year! Would love a Criterion edition, though Arrow is the most likely label for it (and perhaps preferable if it's more likely to include alternative cuts). Anyone know if it's Jackson's preferred edit, the full extended version, or a new redux version? On initial search, I haven't found anything.beamish14 wrote: Sat Jul 26, 2025 2:19 pm A 4K restoration of Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive premiered at TIFF yesterday

Reportedly it was the original cut of Braindead/Dead Alive, not either of the shorter US cuts.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
That's the only version that was ever released in the UK (where we've only ever known it as Braindead), and I suspect this is true of quite a few other places.dwk wrote: Sun Jul 27, 2025 8:49 pm Reportedly it was the original cut of Braindead/Dead Alive, not either of the shorter US cuts.
The big question mark is whether he's scrubbed out all the original 16mm grain with his usual AI tinkering, so I'm definitely waiting for reviews!

Re: Recent Film Restorations
Reviews on Letterboxd and elsewhere state that Jackson asked the audience to stand for the God Save The Queen intro, which was only on uncut Braindead prints, not Dead Alive in either R-rated or unrated form. Of course, that doesn’t stop him from having made further changes…
