Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Some Wim Wenders isn't completely out of the question considering it was in the last newsletter clue with My Dinner with Andre. Ideally, I would like to see The Last Year in Marienbad, My Dinner with Andre, and a Wim Wender's Set, with Gimme Shelter Blu-Ray.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Just going back to some MGM speculation, I think Errol Morris' The Thin Blue Line is a definite possibility. It's currently OOP and the previous release (which I saw this morning for $8 in the subway station) is bare bones.

I sent an email to Criterion a month ago about the possibility of The Quiet Man, (my favorite Ford), but received no reply. They have always responded to my inquiries, not this time though.Hmmm...... One can hope.

I did the same thing regarding Tarkovsky's Nostalghia twice. If their silence can taken as affirming my question, well, consider me extremely happy...Napier wrote:I sent an email to Criterion a month ago about the possibility of The Quiet Man, (my favorite Ford), but received no reply. With that in mind...LAST YEAR IN MARIENBAD, DINNER WITH ANDRE, NOSTALGHIA, AND ANDRE RUBLEV RE-ISSUE WITH BLU-RAY.

And the Quiet Man. How I dream of seeing the emerald hue of Ireland and the thick black pints of porter in a blu-ray Criterion. Makes all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it. Like the rope in gym class.Dr. Snaut wrote:I did the same thing regarding Tarkovsky's Nostalghia twice. Wow -- those Montreal subway trains don't run very frequently, do they?Antoine Doinel wrote:Just going back to some MGM speculation, I think Errol Morris' The Thin Blue Line is a definite possibility. A lack of response doesn't indicate anything.
I asked about Nostalghia a month ago. I did get a "No plans for this title" reply.

Nostalghia has been asked for for about as long as Bottle Rocket. Well, longer, now that Bottle Rocket is actually out.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
I hope this is the right forum to ask this, but I know that Criterion has mentioned that Pasolini's 'Trilogy of Life' films will be released at a yet to be announced date, but has there been any news if said release will be in both standard DVD and bluray (similiar to the BFI releases)

Given that Salo didn't merit a Blu-ray from them, I wouldn't count on it for a lower profile series of titles like these

How do we know a Blu-ray Salo isn't forthcoming?domino harvey wrote:Given that Salo didn't merit a Blu-ray from them, I wouldn't count on it for a lower profile series of titles like these

Given that they're still working through the initial titles they announced last year, I wouldn't place any bets on them going back. But hey, keep the dream alive

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Seventh Seal bluray is what's needed. I would settle for any of the mentioned ones as well though.
Human Condition box would be the release of the year for most contributors in this forum. Something tells me this is a fall release though. I hope that once CC releases last year at marienbad/my dinner with andre/the cook the thief...they will focus on other worthy films that have yet to receive a DVD release. I'm not complaining, but it would be nice to those classics that have not received the light of day despite the fact that we are gradually making the switch to a new format (bluray). Examples would include films by Eustache, Mizoguchi (what happened to story of the late chrysenthamums?), Duras (india song), Rivette (paris/out1), early resnais (thank god for MOC, currently besting CC this year in my opinion), classic silents (greed/docks of ny/big parade), borzage (mortal storm), troell (emigrants/the new land combined release ala yojimbo/sanjuro), scola (a special day), bertolucci (startegem of the spider still not available), etc. the list could go on, so please lets all hope CC and MOC, for that matter, are listening.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Until a decent print of Story of Late Chrysanthemums is discovered, Criterion will never release this (not even sure that they'd put it out under the Eclipse banner -- not in the state that I've seen it screened).

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Michael, you mean that Story of Late Chrysanthemums is in worse shape than the Silent Ozus for example that were released in the Eclipse line?

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Hmm... while the subbed bootleg that is floating around (probably comes from the French disc originally) has its share of damage of all sorts, it's certainly not much worse than "Women of the night". So I can't see any reason for CC not releasing it; and you can bet that they won't unearth any better print anywhere.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
I have a R1 NTSC release VHS from Home Vision Cinema and Janus Films of Mizo's CHRYSANTHENUM - haven't looked at it recently, but remember it to be passable enough (on a quality par with Ozu's THERE WAS A FATHER, same sort of damage issues) - it's copyrighted Shochiku 1939, and Public Media Inc. 1997, suggesting that at least an Eclipse release might be possible, and also that Janus has a print in that it is a 'Janus Films Presentation'...
