Is the Cyborg Blu-ray region free?

That would be great.

considering that the BFI is releasing the 'Trilogy of Life' on both standard DVD AND bluray, any word if Criterion will do the same (since 'Salo' wasn't released on bluray).

I think that Trilogy of Life been more or less unofficially confirmed since Salo came back (at least for DVD, no idea about BR).

Also, when contemporary films by Bay are in the Criterion family, this hurts more than anything; and makes me more fired up that Korea deserves some love too. It's like a big fat slap in the face. Personally, I would love to see Kim Ki-duk, Kim Ki-young, Park Chan-wook, Lee Chang-dong, etc representing my country for Criterion. This is more of a wish (dream) than anything, but I am dying to see Korean film on Criterion. I admit I am biased and unconvincing, but most of all, no matter how ridiculous and funny it might sound. it's a pride that I feel.
In a recent reply to an inquiry about the inclusion of Korean film in the Collection, Mulvaney said they have "no plans as yet, but we're investigating." Check out his reply and related Korean film discussion on pages 57 and 58 of this thread.

It doesn't make sense that Criterion would ignore Korean or other Asian cinema; more likely it's just taking time to develop the necessary connections to strike a possible deal. Then there is the issue of supplements, hiring translators, and so on. It can be inferred by Mulvaney's "investigating" that Criterion is interested in Korean film. Let's be patient. It may take a couple of years, or perhaps sooner, but I tend to think Korean film will find its way into the Collection.

How about a Filipino film making its way into the Criterion Collection?

Do any truly important vintage Filipino films have source materials good enough to meet Criterion's picky standards. All the great Filipino films I've seen apparently have only very badly preserved source materials (in some cases, maybe only a battered screen print, with burned in subs).

I would love to see lovingly restored editions of Brocka and Bernal (for starters) -- especially Himala. But I doubt I will live long enough for this. ;~{

Super-fucking-fantastic news...
Hi Jeff,

Yes we do plan to release "Bigger than Life", however to the best of my knowledge a specific street date has not yet been scheduled. Feel free to check back, and thanks for your e-mail!

Sincerely,

Oh wow. That's great! Maybe it's time to start a Criterion/Fox thread similar to the threads we have with Sony and WB. I definitly think that the Wenders doc Lightning over Water will be an extra on the set, the way that the Wender's Ozu doc Tokyo-Ga was a bonus feature on Ozu's Late Spring.

Anyways, it's great to see that Nicholas Ray is joining the collection!

It is, although it would be even greater if we could get Johnny Guitar too.

I believe we had such a thing on an older incarnation of the forum (the ezboard days, I believe). That was when Fox execs first let it slip that such a deal might be in place during a chat at HTF. They basically announced that 3 Women and Naked Lunch were on the way, and we found out that the deal included "about a dozen" titles. All of those titles were released between late 2003 and early 2006. It was then two years before another Fox-licensed title (The Ice Storm) came out. It's now been about a year since that release. I wouldn't be surprised if Fox titles were now being licensed on a title-by-title basis. I also wouldn't be suprised to see Criterion release The Darjeeling Limited this summer, after Fox's year of exclusivity expires.

So...it's getting to be that time of the month. Anyone have any predictions?

I'll be the forever optimist and say Last Year at Marienbad and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, & Her Lover.

Fox's DVD has been out over a year already so that sort of exclusivity might already be irrelevant. The afterglow from Bottle Rocket could be a more likely reason to hold off a bit longer. As for more Fox titles, I haven't seen anyone mention Richard Fleischer's Violent Saturday yet but the fact that it's not yet received a DVD release seems puzzling. It plays on the Fox Movie Channel, it's available to watch on Hulu and it screened last year for a week in a new print at New York's Film Forum. I don't think the movie is necessarily worthy of a Criterion release, but I could still see them doing something with it.

There was a journalist on the IMDB boards who posted many months ago pretty much what you wrote. Anderson had told him that Criterion would eventually do a special edition of DL but as part of the contract, Fox had one year exclusive rights to maximize sales at retail and video stores. Could very likely be true.

As For Fox...yes, there was that first dozen. I thought the Ice Storm was just a trade-off for having YML in the Ford at Fox box? Hendrickson was quoted as saying that there were new deals with Fox and WB. I have doubts she would have brought Fox up if Bigger than Life was just going to be a one-off.

Philip Lopate confirmed to me personally today that Criterion is indeed doing a Markeresque double bill of Poto and Routine Pleasures. Gorin is a friend of his.

Do you know if this'll be a Criterion or an Eclipse, as previously rumored?
Should I even dare to dream that the Gorin Eclipse would be in addition to this as a Criterion?

My source has been telling me otherwise. Three Gorin films were to be released in an Eclipse set. I'm not sure why this would change.

Because the only reason we all knew Gorin was coming at all was because he was supposedly working on extras for the Three Popular Films set

I wouldn't worry about it now though, the next Eclipse set will obviously be the French New Wave one, since so many of us bought the Madman Chabrols

Something in my gut says the street date for Last Year will be announced either May or June. Probably my weird association of it with Wings of Desire. I'm more curious of when Dillinger's date will be given. With my luck it will probably be December.

Janus' new DILLINGER IS DEAD print will be touring throughout the year so I would say there's no chance of DILLINGER on disc in 2009. Hell, we're still waiting for VIVRE SA VIE.

We already know one June title: MY DINNER WITH ANDRE.
