Swo, looks great!
Off the top of my head the '60s had the last major cluster of them with stuff like California Suite.
That’s late 70s, but it’s an outlier (and got in for the obvious Oscar bait role of... an actress losing an Oscar!). But the Oscars weren’t super into these films even in their 60s heyday, other than the VIPs and Ieri, oggi, domani

I did caveat with off the top of my head for a reason. I suspect this will succeed more on the reputation of the team than the format.

This will do approximately as well as Buster Scruggs did at the Oscars

Looks magisterial! I saw it without sound at work and it looks tremendous. The framing is so exacting. It was obvious from the stills that they were from the film because who else blocks shots this way!

There is scope for some sequences I see.

The color palette reminds me of an older time - though you do see it today sometimes, in things like Kurismaki (Other Side of Hope perhaps), Lazarro Felice and even maybe Martin Eden. Looks so beautiful.

Anderson also seems to advance on his staging capabilities. I think Budapest was a wonderful compendium of still shots and pans and zooms. I also see a lot of moving camera/moving frames here which still works well with his exacting mis-en-scene.

This should be joy to watch! I hope I like it as much as Grand Budapest.

I'll definitely be seeing it (and probably pulling my wife kicking and screaming along with me), but man, that's a very Wes Anderson looking movie

I’m not so sure. It’s hard to gauge how much emotional impact this kind of narrative will yield but it’s still very unclear how separated all these stories will be (the characters popping up looking differently in color and b&w sequences make me think it’s not as cut and dry as it appears) and I think the industry has been moving towards wanting to award Anderson at least a screenplay Oscar for a while now, so this could be his year. Having said that, with Mike Mills and perhaps PTA also both having prospective films coming out this year, I might eat those words

This shot has to be a reference to Mon Oncle, right?

It's what I thought of, too, so I'm assuming so.

Considering that Hulot like ad he made with Brad Pitt I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of references in this.

Given what else Searchlight has coming down the pike and its Summer release date, TFD doesn't exactly scream awards contender. But hey, I guess you could've said the same about Grand Budapest and look how that turned out (even though its only wins were in the crafts categories).

Yeah, and Moonrise Kingdom which had a May release (though surprisingly that was only nominated for one Oscar). I'm not declaring a prediction this early but I do think The Grand Budapest Hotel's noms initiated an awareness for me that Hollywood very much wants to reward Anderson.

Obviously this trailer is as Wes Anderson-y as it gets, but between the Academy ratio, the wide-angle lens, and the somewhat high angle of some of the ensemble shots, it was looking fairly Roy Andersson-y at times...

Is this a model or an actual location? If it's an actual location, I think I'm quitting my job and moving.

Another great reference besides the ones I mentioned. All you needed was the pale make-up on the actors! : D

Well if it exists I have yet to stumble on this particular courtyard.
It looks highly cut and paste coupled with some art department deployed flats. It has a highly ligne claire 2D style that we've come to expect from WA but here's an example of what you can expect for real situated in one of the more popular shopping areas named appropriately Rue Hergé.

More details on the unexpected elements in the film:
Matt Zoller Seitz wrote:"It's basically like Grand Budapest Hotel in terms of tone and the themes of a long gone way of life and a certain cultural refinement we seem to have lost," said Anderson, offering exclusive insight into his new project. "Except this time with lasers and mutants."

I may be one of the few who don’t care for Anderson movies all that much... However, despite not seeing one for almost 10yrs, this looks really beautiful. I can definitely see the Tati... The poster art reminds me of Albert Dubout.

Reports of the film being a musical originated in the French press, proof that French journalism is garbage and unworthy of being the subject of something like a feature film

I've been relatively cold on Anderson's last couple of films, but genuinely can't wait for this – it looks like a lot of fun. Whatever his detractors say, it's hard to think of too many other contemporary filmmakers whose work is as assured and just reliably good.
