I wonder if producer Kees Kasander owns it outright, like he does with Peter Greenaway’s The Baby of Macon

Ken Park has such a strange release history, as one of those films that contains so many transgressive moments of all stripes that each individual territory seems to have some elements of it that they will pass but others which they require to be censored. I have a Region 3 South Korean DVD from around the time of its release which has a bizarre approach that censors through pixellation all of the nudity in sexual situations (the early Kids-style teen sex scene, the self strangulation through to climax scene) yet does include that full frontal shot of the father returning back home with the pan up from him drunkenly peeing in the toilet before going in to attempt to molest his son, as well as the graphic murdering of the grandparents scene intact.

Anyone familiar with East End Hustle? I probably wouldn't have bought it if it weren't for it being Canadian International Pictures's first 4K release, but it is and so I did. I can't help but be a little curious about what I'm getting into!

I saw it theatrically during its recent run at a few Canadian theatres. The director was there to do a Q&A after the movie, but answered almost every question with with "Gee, I don't remember" or "I don't know." Not in an asshole way, just that the movie was made a long time ago. Seemed like a nice guy though. Probably for the best that he didn't do a commentary though. As for the movie, it was an entertaining enough 70's exploitation-type film, and I'll probably pick up the disc eventually.

Surprised no one else has mentioned ::sotto voce Baba O' Riley:: Teenage Caveman, a movie I only remember as high-caliber gore crossed with some of the most undercooked waifish actors of any generation, which is kind of incredible. While Bully is the formal winner for Clark in my book, there are always moments of sweet sublimity that exist in his films that only he can conjure (the high & the low, I suppose), like the end credits of Another Day In Paradise, which use born-again era Dylan to magnificent effect, especially after all that occurs in the rest of that film.

As for the Marfa Girl films, I never took the bait to stream it back in the day for $6, but that commentary track should be....interesting.

Ken Park includes lots of source music that seem like a labyrinthine amount of heavy lifting for anyone at that end of the supply chain (filmed transgressions notwithstanding), but at the rate that VS keep teasing Looking For Mr. Goodbar, maybe they can one day find a way? I would also accept a total disregard on their part & asking for forgiveness later physical edition, as releasing Ken Park would probably not stoke the ire of anyone who really cares. That is, unless Kees Kasander still owns it outright.

Teenage Caveman is probably the best of that run of those remakes of 50's AIP monster and sci-fi movies (though I have never got to see the remake of Earth vs The Giant Spider with Dan Aykroyd!), because it took a rather staid original film with a Planet of the Apes-anticipating twist and actually transformed it into one of the quintessential Larry Clark 'barely legal kids hanging around half-naked in a druggy haze' films. It probably helps that most of the film is set inside a bomb shelter built to ride out the apocalypse, which only adds to the kids enjoying themselves opting out and withdrawing from the outside world that their parents have ruined to just play with each other! That its all non-X-rated TV movie glossy rather than transgressively rough and ready only adds to the amusement factor! (And now I'm wondering how it would work in combination with later serious minded 'bunker' films like The Hole, 10 Cloverfield Lane or The Divide!)

(I would really like a boxset of that early 2000s AIP monster movie remake series some time. Maybe paired up with the mid-90s "Rebel Highway" series of remakes of AIPs 50's juvenile delinquent films!)

Same. They’re with Paramount as a result of being produced by Showtime, so perhaps one day we will. An incredibly mixed bag, of course, but Robert Rodriguez’s is considerably better than his recent output

Villages of the Damned is basically a crystallization of Vinegar Syndrome in our time. Beatriz strikes me as a suitable but unremarkable late entry into the gothic tradition, The Sky Is Falling is almost fascinatingly awful (and if it weren't for Monster A Go-Go, would be the worst movie I've seen this year), and Forest of the Wolf is a true gem that honestly needed its own release with the Kat Ellinger commentary and everything that usually graces semi-prestigious releases of European horror movies.

I'm surprised no has mentioned this but a former Vinegar Syndrome Partner Label now turned independent company, TerrorVision has announced that they're planning on releasing L'Inferno based off the link given. It still will be the same quality as the Kickstarter release most likely, but considering their typical releases w/ slip cost $24, most of the time, it's definitely a better deal and if it's successful could bring more Redwood Creek Films (fingers crossed for Warning Shadows and By the Law), it's not an official announcement yet so details are yet tbc but it's definitely in the works.

The packaging for La Guerre est finie does not list the audio commentary, but it does in fact appear on the disc, under the "Audio" options.

Don’t know why this got moved to here but it’s now officially been released:
https://www.terror-vision.com/store/dantes-inferno
Based off the captures though, it still definitely appears to be the DVD quality that Redwood Creek released, but regardless it’s nice to get a copy of this that isn’t wildly overpriced with a new commentary to boot.

My bets are going towards January for Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians considering The Tune is most likely scheduled for December. Either way very excited for it as Lemonade Joe is one of my favorite films of all time and I’ve been meaning to see more of Lipsky’s work. Also side note, I also love the work of Jiri Brdecka who wrote this film and I really hope his work with Jiri Trkna gets a release at some point.

Boy Harsher are really awesome.

You might also dig Minuit Machine or Paradox Obscur.

When their clue specified something along the lines of "one of the greatest genre directors", I'm not sure how Cronenberg failed to cross my mind.

I didn’t even look at the specs before pre-ordering. “Existenz” and “4K” was enough for me.

Probably because Vinegar Syndrome tends to oversell their mystery titles. So when they say "one of the greatest genre directors" ones first thought goes to anyone who isn't a great director.

Another batch of releases have been announced to kick off Partner Label Month, including Alex Ross Perry's Queen of Earth (from IFC Films), The Dog Who Stopped the War (from CIP), and Stielke, Heinz, Fifteen (from Altered Innocence).

It's not a film I'm familiar with but the latter is the second title that Altered Innocence have licensed from DEFA. Some Konrad Wolf is probably too much to wish for...

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned Art Label yet, guessing that it’s because their first release isn’t really a standout to start with but they show some promise and I hope that it means more older experimental films will be released especially considering their Surf Reality set is based off films from the 80s New York underground scene. Who knows maybe one day, they’ll even release some Bruce Conner, a man can hope.

Vinegar Syndrome has announced a new sublabel called cinematographe which
...will offer “a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s.”
