Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,
We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.
Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.
Here’s what’s in the pipeline:
The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear
Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.

They definitely said on Facebook that they were still working on Walkabout, but that it was taking a while due to issues Jeff discusses above.

"Yes" is a good thing, but has Criterion actually said anything in regard to it's future Gosha release? I mean have they said what films exactly to expect and a potential timeframe? Any info is always appreciated.Cinephrenic wrote:Yes, but could be Eclipse or main line.Vegeta84 wrote:Does anyone know if Criterion has any plans on releasing any of their Hideo Gosha films on their label soon? I know they own the rights to 3 Outlaw Samurai and Bandits Vs Samurai Squadron and was wondering when they might release them.

Nothing specific on titles or plans, but you should ask other titles on Facebook to see if they plan to release it.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
a friend on the inside sent me a cryptic email with a list of a bunch of titles - some were the IFC titles that have already been announced and others like M and VIVRE SA VIE have since come to be known to be 2010 releases.
WALKABOUT was on this list as a blu ray title and i believe to be announced on Feb 15th. so im guessing that would put the release somewhere near May/June.
perhaps they've solved whatever tech isues they were having.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
WEEKEND wasnt on the list they sent.
this is what i know (again by now most of these are common knowledge except for WALKABOUT):
Walkabout BD
Red Desert DVD and BD
M BD
The Secret of the Grain DVD
Vivre sa Vie DVD and BD
Summer Hours DVD and BD
these are getting officially announced with release dates on either Jan 15th or Feb 15th.
it's disappointing that SECRET OF THE GRAIN isn't getting a blu ray.

Thanks for the confirmation, and welcome to the boards. I'm going to still hold out hope for Weekend as well as the other OOP New Yorker catalogue (Rivette's stuff I especially would like to see Criterion get a hold of).khan0890 wrote:WEEKEND wasnt on the list they sent.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
thanks so much for the kind welcome!
happy to pass along the info.
it seems that there's at least a couple blank spots for wildcards to sneak in there. im sure WEEKEND will make it in.
my dream would be at some point for Criterion to obtain Bertolucci's BEFORE THE REVOLUTION, which was the first title Dan Talbot acquired for New Yorker Films. There's a VHS floating around somewhere but I really love that film and think it could become a classic Criterion.

You should get the RHV edition from Italy, it's magnificent.khan0890 wrote:

I second that! But whatever did happen to that expected Criterion edition? Do I remember correctly that Bertolucci himself had mentioned it?

Yes, he did. But a while ago (pre-Facebook) I asked Mulvaney about "Spider's Stratagem" and he said that although they would like to do more Bertolucci they had "no plans" in the near future.Davidspector wrote:I second that! Oh well. The Bertolucci film that seems to have dropped completely off the map is Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man - I've seen no mention of it even in Criterionforum (though I haven't run a search), which in all things cinema has a Brittanica size institutional memory. I remember liking the film, but these things can change as you get older.

There's been a little mention of "Tragedy" in the Bertolucci on DVD thread. The only DVD release I know of is this French one.

Excuse my ignorance but is this a different version of it?? the " redux" part I mean, of courseJeff wrote:Since most of the clues in the 2010 picture were for titles already announced for Jan-March, I feel pretty confident that the following are the April/May titles, but which titles will be in which months and which new titles will get Blus are random speculation on my part.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
so i had a conversation with an insider @ Criterion last night and they confirmed that WALKABOUT is indeed coming out early in 2010.
they also said that rumors they were having technical problems with WALKABOUT are false. the delay is just due to a backlog of titles they are bringing to the market. my source also conceded that announcing WALKABOUT so long ago, in 08 with the first batch of discs, might be reason such rumors were out there.
but anyway WALKABOUT is on the way.
i also asked about new yorker films titles and it seems whoever still controls the library is still interested in keeping it intact, which would make it financially prohibitive for Criterion.

his relationship with Criterion has been tenuous as of late due to his misgivings about the label's apathetic attitudes towards "low-budget, rock-n-roll films shot on 16mm and other cheaper film stock" (which apparently cost considerably more to restore than films shot in 35mm or higher?

As Jeff already stated in this thread a few days ago, these weren't rumors. They were comments straight from the mouth of Criterion. Your insider doesn't know much imo.khan0890 wrote:so i had a conversation with an insider @ Criterion last night and they confirmed that WALKABOUT is indeed coming out early in 2010.

forgive me, what statements "straight from the mouth of criterion" are you talking about? if you could provide a link or a quote perhaps I could check it out.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Criterion responded to a question about Walkabout on their Facebook page by saying that they had decided the film needed a full restoration, and would be taking longer than originally anticipated. That was probably a few months ago. It's not possible to link to, and finding the quote would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.khan0890 wrote:forgive me, what statements "straight from the mouth of criterion" are you talking about? if you could provide a link or a quote perhaps I could check it out.
