The wait for I Walked With A Zombie continues. Apparently sales for the other Lewtons weren't so good.
I’m sure it has something to do with the materials. With all the junk that comes out of Shout / Scream, I doubt they would suddenly pass on releasing more Lewtons.
It's not so much just the low sales, but the low sales combined with the transfer cost and the licensing costs:
"
Hello all.
The truth is poor sales. Plain and simple. The standards for the transfers is high, the cost is high, and the licensing is high. Sales did not translate. I can’t say more, but I produced these releases, and I’ve been working with the Lewton films since 2003. I’m terribly disappointed, as work was in progress on a number of titles when it was all halted. I wish it were otherwise. I appreciate all the support given and all the purchases made. Hopefully something will jumpstart their heartbeat in the future.
Thanks.
Constantine"

Well that's a shame. They've been on my wishlist but I haven't seen them dip low enough to take the plunge yet

I would kill for a restoration of The 7th Victim, is Shout the rights holder just sitting on this indefinitely, or is it possible for another cult label with more money/resources to rescue these?

This has been my problem too. Given SF's prices and that they never have decent sales anymore a lot of their releases now get bumped down in favor of other stuff on my wishlist. There are just too many labels releasing great stuff to grab it all (not a complaint, just the reality of the marketplace). I did grab
The Curse of the Cat People during a B2G1 at Target finally (and it's definitely a great release) and may do the same with
The Leopard Man eventually.
It's a shame this is happening before
The 7th Victim and
I Walked with a Zombie which I'd think outside of
Cat People would be the biggest Lewton sellers. I know I wouldn't hesitate about the price point when buying
The 7th Victim if that ever gets released (I had hoped Criterion would do it after
Cat People)
I assume the short runtimes of these titles also doesn't help when people see the price. I've noticed at least on this forum and blu-ray.com that people have a weird sense thinking shorter feature films should cost less many...which I find absurd.

I actually cleared out a ton of my wishlist during Target's B2G1 in December, but they still weren't quite low enough for me then (my personal rule--with exceptions for titles going OOP--is that the sale price before shipping and tax can't exceed 50% MSRP, which I feel is pretty lenient)

Shout! Factory produced some great extras for the Lewtons, doing far more than Criterion did with Cat People. But I honestly wouldn't be upset if the remainder were released by Warner Archive, even if it means no new supplements. At least the prices would be decent during a sale.

Or a release of some of the unreleased films like
Youth Runs Wild.

Thank you for sharing the link. I Walked With A Zombie is another Jacques Tourneur title so I remain puzzled as to why Criterion didn't purchase it together with Cat People. Unless it is in the pipeline with them and they are just keeping very quiet about it. It's not as though it needs major restoration; the Japanese Blu-Ray looked decent.

Could they have done a Lewton “box” with the titles they have? Does that help their profit margins or hurt them?
I’ve also been holding off on some of their stuff wondering if there will be more 4K discs after The Deer Hunter in May..

As well as:
4 Western Classics (Lone Gun/Ride Out for Revenge/Gunsight Ridge/Gun Belt)
Bearcats! The Complete Series
Captain America (1990)
Swimming to Cambodia (DVD)
Blue Lightning (DVD)
Wonder why Swimming to Cambodia never made it to Blu... though I admit it's not as visually appealing as Gray's Anatomy.

That is actually the 1990 Albert Pyun Captain America that is going OOP. Dont know why Shout's site says 1979.

I've really debated on picking that up just because of how ridiculous it is, but it really is a terrible film. And knowing it will go out of print, I still don't know if I can bring myself to do it, even though I could probably sell it in the future for more.

I've seen it too, and it was especially disappointing for a comic book fan. The only thing I really remember about it is the recurring foolproof tactic of pretending to throw up from motion sickness if you ever need to steal someone's car.

I picked up a copy years ago at Target for like $10 and haven't felt enough self hatred to put it in the Blu-ray player.
Unless I'm misremembering, but I think the costume is so goofy that instead of holes for his ears to stick through, they have rubber ears glued onto the side of his head.

Thinking again about the Lewtons.. didn’t Kino use Kickstarter for their African American cinema box? I can’t see Shout doing that, but I can see a model where they’ll produce titles, or a string of titles, if enough people stake them in advance.. like, if x people pledge or subscribe to buy A, B, C and D..
