Watched Neon Bible the other night. It's not an early Terence Davies film unless it's got a scene of people having a sing-song and the bit with the Chattanooga Choo Choo duly delivered. You also get to hear the theme tune from the Hovis bread advert and a scene of kids watching a film in the cinema.

I cannot recall now but was there also a loving pan across the pattern of a carpet anywhere in The Neon Bible?

The most exciting film of the week is the Hitler-slapping time travelling drama La belle epoque showing on BBC4 at 9 p.m. on Saturday 5th. That is followed at 11:40 p.m. the same evening by Harry Birrell Presents Films of Love and War.

BBC4's Storyville season continues at 10 p.m. on Wednesday 9th with F@ck This Job, which the BBC has, either tactfully or opportunistically, title changed to "Tango With Putin". That's something that is either going to be relevant to current events or too relevant to remain on the schedules!

BBC2 is showing the Keira Knightley film Misbehaviour at 9 p.m. on Sunday 6th.

After a fallow few months Film4 comes roaring back with a vengeance next week, starting with a double bill on Saturday 5th of Brightburn at 10:45 p.m. followed by Her Smell at 12:35 a.m. (the first Alex Ross Perry film to turn up on UK TV I think). The Norwegian film Ninjababy is showing at 12:10 a.m. on Tuesday 8th (in a double bill followed by a repeat of Miranda July's The Future) and Can You Ever Forgive Me? is showing at 9 p.m. on Tuesday 8th. There are also repeats of Lynne Ramsey's You Were Never Really Here at 11 p.m. on Sunday 6th and Andrea Arnold's 2011 adaptation of Wuthering Heights at 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday 9th. Also the Isabelle Huppert film Things To Come at 1:45 a.m. on Thursday 10th and Happy As Lazzaro at 1:25 a.m. on Friday 11th.

David DeCoteau immediately jumps to being the filmmaker with the most premieres on UK television so far this year with three films about wrong'uns that seem to strangely keep taking the form of shirtless twinks (Stalked By My Teacher (aka The Wrong Teacher); The Killer Affair (aka The Wrong Boy Next Door) from 2019 and Killer In The Attic (aka The Wrong Real Estate Agent) from 2021) which are showing each afternoon from Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th! Vivica A. Fox is also now the actor to beat for being in the most premieres as well! If you think they might run out of David DeCoteau films any time soon, he's already completed two this year!

(All I want to know is when will Channel 5 get around to 90210 Shark Attack)

On the subject of horror, the Horror Channel is showing Prey at 9 p.m. on Saturday 5th, Wired Shut at 9 p.m. on Sunday 6th and A Good Woman Is Hard To Find at 10:30 p.m. on Friday 11th.

It turns out that this was extra-super-duper relevant and replaced the screening of Writing With Fire yesterday evening, which is presumably going to turn up next Wednesday. Though that also likely means that most people will have missed it and be forced into watching it on the catch up service now.

Pretty good next week and very Sony Pictures-themed. jlnight has noted the two big premieres which clash together on the evening of Saturday 12th with Once Upon A Time... in Hollywood showing at 9 p.m. on Channel 4 up against Pedro Almodóvar's Pain and Glory on BBC4, also a 9 p.m., which is immediately followed at 10:45 p.m. by Almodóvar's 2020 short film The Human Voice starring Tilda Swinton and based on a Jean Cocteau play.

With those hard hitters the other film showing at 9 p.m. on Saturday 12th, Await Further Instructions on the Horror Channel, unfortunately doesn't stand much of a chance! But it does look interesting and is at least repeated at 10:50 p.m. on Thursday 17th.

Its actually a short film week as Film4 are showing a series of ten to fifteen minute films from Monday to Friday at around 11:10 p.m., that appear to be part of the Foresight series of afro-futurism sci-fi themed pieces. They Heard Him Shout Allahu Akhbar is on Monday evening, X US is on Tuesday evening, The Future Isn't What It Used To Be is on Wednesday evening, Twice As Good is on Thursday evening, and Digging is on Friday evening.

It is an action themed week as well, as the Keanu Reeves film Replicas is showing on the 5star channel at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday 12th. And Rambo: Last Blood is showing on Channel 5 at 10 p.m. on Wednesday 16th.

Film4's one feature film premiere of the week is Black and Blue at 9 p.m. on Thursday 17th.

And the David DeCoteau-Vivica A. Fox tag-team moves into a seemingly insurmountable lead as three more of his TV movies are premiered on Channel 5 in the afternoons next week with The Sinister Stepfather (aka The Wrong Mr. Right) on Monday 14th, A Stranger In My Home (aka The Wrong Housesitter) on Wednesday 16th and My Deadly Ex (aka The Wrong Wedding Planner) on Friday 18th. That means that David DeCoteau has now had six films premiered on UK television this year! And there are still a couple more that could turn up!

Danger Route, one of only two Amicus films I hadn’t managed to get copies of when I did my PhD. Being a thriller it was outside my scope, but I’m keen to see it.

Pretty good next week. jlnight has noted the big premieres on Saturday 19th with Channel 4 showing Alita: Battle Angel at 9 p.m. and BBC4 showing the South Korean film by Lee Chang-dong Burning at 10 p.m. Though since I have the discs of both of those films trapped in my 'to watch' pile at the moment, I'm actually more intrigued by the premiere on the Horror Channel at 9 p.m. (so clashing with the other two) of the Kevin Bacon thriller Cop Car.

Another scheduling clash occurs on Sunday 20th with BBC2 showing Aaron Taylor-Johnson being directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson in A Million Little Pieces at 10 p.m. and M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable/Split sequel Glass on Channel 4, also at 10 p.m.

BBC4's Storyville season continues with a timely film about the previous Ukraine war a few years back, The Distant Barking of Dogs at 10 p.m. on Wednesday 23rd (F@ck This Job/Tango With Putin is also getting a repeat on BBC2 at 11:15 p.m. on Thursday 24th, perhaps acknowledging that changing the schedule around led to it getting missed when it was shown a couple of weeks ago. Being on BBC2 also means that it will be un-DOG-tagged)

And BBC3 surprisingly has a premiere of note with County Lines showing at 10 p.m. on Friday 25th, which the BFI have just put out on Blu-ray. Though that does clash with the other premiere of the week on the Horror Channel, of Deadsight at 11:10 p.m.

And for some reason Film4 has decided that we all need the opportunity to see the entire series of xXx movies showing each night at 9 p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday! (I have only seen the first one of those but have to admit to finding the opening amusing when the tuxedo clad Bond-style spy is completely out of his element inside a goth-styled rave scene, sticks out like a sore thumb and is swiftly beaten up and assassinated before we get to the more appropriate for the modern day of 2002 Vin Diesel character! Even if I think the same opening gag occurred in Teen Agent back in the early 1990s!)

A really interesting week with lots of big films. jlnight has noted the big ones, but I'll add some trailers.

Photograph is showing on BBC4 at 10 p.m. on Saturday 26th which is the latest film by Ritesh Batra who previously directed The Lunchbox, with the Jim Broadbent and Charlotte Rampling The Sense of an Ending and Robert Redford and Jane Fonda starring Our Souls At Night coming in between. (I'm getting The Wedding Banquet vibes from that trailer!)

Film4 is showing horror film The Furies at 11:20 p.m. on Saturday 26th. Which annoyingly means that I have to refer to the western as "The Furies (1950)" from now on! Film4's other premieres of the week are The Rhythm Section at 9 p.m. on Monday 28th (Film4 have the market cornered on crazed revenging women in violent thrillers at the moment!), and Tolkein at 9 p.m. on Thursday 31st. Will it be an amazing biopic, or just a to(l)ke(i)n effort?

BBC4's Storyville documentary series continues with another film about Ukraine at 10 p.m. on Wednesday 30th, with The Earth Is As Blue As An Orange. And BBC3 is showing The Miseducation of Cameron Post at 9 p.m. on Friday 1st.

And the Horror Channel continues to effortlessly show the most entertaining looking films of the week with Cooties at 9 p.m. on Saturday 26th.

In terms of repeats the big one is BBC4 showing the 1965 Ken Loach television film from the year before his groundbreaking Cathy Come Home and also starring Carol White, Up The Junction, is showing on BBC4 at 10 p.m. on Tuesday 29th, which appears to be tying in to the first part of a documentary on BBC2 at 9 p.m. that is worryingly trying to suggest that censorship campaigner Mary Whitehouse was correct in her Crusades of Light, in which Loach is apparently interviewed. Up The Junction itself is perhaps most famous for influencing the Squeeze song.

As jlnight has noted Film4 jumps on the bandwagon of the recent Indicator announcement of a Humphrey Bogart boxset with a screening of Dead Reckoning at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday 30th.

Very quiet next week with only a few notable items of interest, mostly on BBC4. At 10 p.m.on Monday 4th BBC4 is showing The Challenger as a tribute to William Hurt. And the Storyville season continues at 10 p.m. on Wednesday 6th with The Truffle Hunters.

Though the most exciting film of the week is on the Horror Channel at 9 p.m. on Saturday 2nd with Barbara Steele(!) heading up an astonishing cast of horror names in The Butterfly Room. In addition to the names in the trailer according to imdb there is also Adrienne King (the final girl from Friday the 13th), P.J. Soles (of course from Carrie and Halloween), James Karen turns up in a small role, and Joe Dante appears as a taxi driver!

I forgot the big one, which is that BBC2 is starting to show the Ken Burns series Muhammad Ali from 10:20 p.m. on Sunday 3rd. They are doing the same weird thing as with the Hemingway series of taking an original series that ran for 4 parts of 2 hours each In the US (with adverts) and turning it into 8 episodes of 50 minutes.

Can anyone confirm a previous terrestrial transmission date for HENNESSY (1975)? It has its channel premiere on Talking Pictures TV on 6 April, but I have been assured that it has previously been shown on London ITV some years ago. I can find no trace of it. If my friend is in error (and he seemed pretty certain), the TPTV transmission is its UK TV premiere.

Channel 6 ran from 2006 to 2008, when it was bought out and rebranded 3e. It was rebranded again as Virgin Media Two in 2018.

Nice to see Cube on Film4. I don't remember that film ever being shown on any of the major channels before, though I recall the Horror channel showed Cube 2: Hypercube (a bit too convoluted) and kinda-sorta-prequel but to say why is a major spoiler Cube Zero (which is actually pretty good) around 2008 or so.

(I had not realised until now that it got a Japanese remake last year!)

Colin, CUBE was shown by Channel 5 at 2.00am on Boxing Day 2005.

That explains why I have never noted it as my area of the country only got Channel 5 and the other Freeview channels in May 2008! I note that Film4 are also showing the 2000 Charlie's Angels film and its sequel Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle at 9 p.m. on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th respectively, which also showed on Channel 5 in the 2000s, so maybe they are going through a phase of acquiring from the other network! (Which is good in getting films shown un-DOG-tagged)

Not too much beyond the films that jlnight has noted next week. The Favourite on Channel 4 at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday 9th and is the big film of the week, with Zhang Yimou's monochromatic Shadow on Film4 at 11:10 p.m. on Thursday 14th.

After showing Almodóvar's take on the Jean Cocteau play The Human Voice a couple of weeks ago, at 10 p.m. on Good Friday BBC2 is showing La Voix Humaine, a filmed version of an opera take on the Francis Poulenc play based on the Cocteau, that is directed by James Kent (The Aftermath, Testament of Youth)

The Horror Channel is still going strong with a double bill on Saturday 9th of Alive at 9 p.m. (with Angus Macfadyen seemingly swapping sides from victim in Saw II to torturer here) followed by the other big film of the week in the film that first got Ti West noticed, where the mumblecore generation (embodied in Greta Gerwig and Lena Dunham) goes up against old-style horror (embodied by Dee Wallace and Mary Woronov) in The House of the Devil at 10:55 p.m.

Repeat-wise of course Cube (1997) is on Film4 at 11:10 p.m. on Good Friday. Since we are talking about Vincenzo Natali's first feature being screened, it might be worth also linking to his first short film too, which is just as claustrophobically good: Elevated (It is far better than that lift-set M. Night Shyamalan film Devil from a decade later!)

And I love Natali's satire on high-end consumerism in his entry in The ABCs of Death 2, U is for Utopia, and find it highly amusing that the YouTube algorithm appears to have labelled the video that it "includes paid promotion"!

Not that I'm aware of, but there's always That Sugar Film...

There's also Butter, the horrible Jennifer Garner comedy about butter sculptures (which also stars Hugh Jackman, who has a cameo in That Sugar Film!)

Try adding Sugar (2008), Flour (2012), Chocolate (2000) and Nuts (1987).

Quite an interesting range of films over the Easter week.

The big premiere of the Easter weekend is Captain Marvel on Channel 4 at 9:25 p.m. on Saturday 16th. Though the other big film turns up at the other end of the week with ITV1 showing Creed II at 10:45 p.m. on Friday 22nd.

Film4's latest entry in their series of films starring crazy dames is I Blame Society at 11 p.m.

The most exciting film of the week is the premiere of Quentin Dupieux's Mandibles on Film4 at 11:45 p.m. on Easter Sunday. Which is the first time a Dupieux film has been shown on a major UK television channel (though I think Rubber may have turned up on the Horror channel back in the day)

Repeat-wise jlnight has noted the double bill of the 1933 King Kong at 10 p.m. and The Thing From Another World at 11:35 p.m. on Thursday 21st, but they are preceded by the first part of the 1987 documentary The RKO Story at 9 p.m., which likely means that there will be another five weeks of RKO-related films turning up.
