Awesome to see Seligman get in there!

Sarnoski’s nomination is especially notable because his studio didn’t send any screeners to DGA. That means they went out of their way to see it and vote for him

That’s real great news. I’m definitely rooting for the film.

Same, and Seligman would be a deserving win as well. I can't stand this ubiquitous Villeneuve Dune love though, I'd almost rather Branagh stay there... I probably hated that film more, but at least I can comprehend why people are flocking to it for awards season, since it's like a mix between Jojo Rabbit and Roma's worst traits. Dune is just... bombastic nonsense, sacrificing all easy lobs thrown its way for character development that may lay ground for bare-minimum investment. I haven't met anyone who doesn't like it though so this is clearly a 'me' problem I just can't shake, partly because I still have yet to read a defense that inspires me to reconsider, and I'd like to think I easily budge.

With a week to go until the Oscar nominations are announced, would there be any interest in a merged nominations/awards prediction competition for a prize of a $10 Criterion store discount code? Probably need at least five people interested to make it worth doing...

I’m interested even sans code.

As am I. Wouldn't mind throwing in an additional code if it sweetens the deal at all (a lot of us have these $10 Kane codes arriving right now, I imagine).

Definitely interested, as always

I’m interested but will be competing non-competitively from the sidelines, as I never watched what I was supposed to watch last time for losing

I think you did, actually

Turns out I’m one of the culprits there, but maybe Soundchaser will grant us his leave to play this year (I will watch that movie at some point!)

I'll also def post predictions, competitively or not

OK, corollary question: how would participants rather have their prediction game done?

RARE: Picture/Director/Acting

MEDIUM: Picture/Director/Acting/Screenplay/International Feature/Cinematography

WELL: Everything except Shorts and Song

BURNT: Everything including Shorts and Song

Yes, I am in need of lunch

Well, but I'd say throw in Song too

Shorts are all I have a sense of so I’ll vote for that.

I like to go all in (or at least "well", though I like predicting Song; it's the shorts that I know nothing about) so "burnt" gets my vote

95% of academy members voting for shorts haven’t seen them either, so we are all on the same playing field

I vote Burnt as well — and no worries to anyone who hasn’t watched Chambre 212 yet. Seeing as there’s no way I’ve paid enough attention to win this year, I expect the shoe will soon be on the other foot.

Either well or burnt is fine (aaaand that’ll be the first and last time I opt for either of those as an order..)

I’ve somehow managed to see a higher percentage of the shorts than any other category.

I vote WELL, and you can include Song if others also want that too.

What if we did them all but the bigger categories were worth more and the more chaotic, underseen (unless you’re knives) categories still had value but wouldn’t decide it on their own?

Something like:

5 POINTS: Picture, Director, Acting, Screenplay

3 POINTS: International Feature, Cinematography, Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, Editing, Sound, Costume, Makeup/Hair, Score, Production Design, Visual Effects

1 POINT: Song, Animated Short, Documentary Short, Live Action Short

As I always say to my wife, I’m open to suggestions and/or outright rejection
