david hare wrote:Ive just got my trembling hands on four of the Studio Canal BluRay titles. JB city has them all up but I cant speak for other stores obviously. They seem to be only ordering in limited numbers so grab these while you can.

The le Mepris is gobsmacking. More later. How the hell do you do screen grabs from Power DVD??
Looking forward to some screengrabs. Can you confirm the dvd's are housed as advertised?

Ezy have the new Leanard Cohen CD/DVD LIVE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT as coming out on October 16. Strange since it is out on the 20th [Blue Ray & vinyl as well] on the 20th in the US.

This has been my most wanted offering from the Murray Lerner series and it follws rather quickly on the heels of the recent Moody Blues release.

Details here: http://1heckofaguy.com/2009/08/18/leona ... t-20-2009/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It is interesting to note that all the previous Lerner releases have been presented in 4:3. The Moodys was the first to be done in 16:9 as will Cohen. [The Who re-release was cropped to 16:9 also].

david hare wrote:I dont have/dont know what is the additional software to do grabs from Power even playing them through Any, alas.

They are al in the gorgeous Euro packaging and the OLFC thing comes off with the shrinkwrap (Hallelujah!) Of the six I bought all are Region A/B except Belle which is B only. I didnt buy it but I assume Marienbad is also Region B given Crite's egion A version. Suprisingly Ran is A/B.

One fiddly thing for people with complicated audio setups and players all titles default to DTS-HD master audio and some players cant change that on the run but there isn't an option in the language menus I had to reset the Panny player's audio outputs. No bother after that.

The transfers are absolutely gorgeous - Belle and Deer Hunter look pristine and razor sharp. Getting to the others later.

The best news is the price - JB city at least 22.98 for all except Deer Hunter and Ran which are 26.98. These things are absolute bargains.

If anyone here goes into the city today do your enquiries if any with a pretty young girl called Micaela at the info counter- she was great assistance to me over the phone - she can speak French so there was no trouble reading the titles to her and she was kind enough to put my requests away (I ended up getting two more) These things will walk off the shelves.
$22.98 in Brisbane, as well. I picked up three. What was interesting, and very encouraging, is that the titles are given prime shelf space. Hopefully they will sell well, as it would be very nice to have more BD local releases of the StudioCanal back-catalogue.

Now, I only need to buy a Blu-ray player!

Hi David, good to see someone else out there as enthusiastic as I am about these releases. I just went to my local JB and found the same prices in store, despite the higher online prices. I went there planning to get two for $33, decided to get five for $127 total, and a bargain at that.

I can confirm that Marienbad, like the Bunuel, is region-B locked, according to the list, and that its picture quality is in the upper end of this series. Deer Hunter was the first one I put on and HELL!!!! It absolutely blows the 3-yr-old blu out of the water. That blu looked nearly as bad as Terminator. Faded, scratched print. This one's colours are truer than I've ever come to hope for this great great favourite movie of mine. Buy, blind-buy withot hesitation!

Le Mepris looks disappointing in certain sequences near the beginning, but I found clears up a lot after that, but haven't watched all of it yet.

I also got Belle du Jour and Ran, with both being incredible improvements over DVDs, if perhaps not as impressive for me personally as Deer Hunter; but I've seen more SD and worse copies of Deer than the others. Ran looks truer than it ever has, but it often has a softer look, which I think is a natural product of the lighting used. The storming of the castle at 60 mins has always been a favourite scene of mine, and exceeded all my expectations in high def. Gives me great hope for movies I know by heart on SD like Lawrence of Arabia!

I forget if you cleared these points up for folks but

1) discs do not slide into the back, but sit on a bubble in the back.

2) hardbooks are the height of regular blu ray cases and sit nicely alongside them, unlike warner digibooks which are about a cm taller.

From Madman on November 18th Rene Clair's I Married a Witch. No real extras.

Also, Ezy DVD has Rosselini's "Dove la Liberta" listed for November 18th, but it doesn't show up on Madman's site.

Shouldn't you have chosen a different Tarkovsky film for your handle, Stalker?

How does the Deer Hunter release compare to the Universal one?: http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/802732" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Did you manage any screencaps for any of these yet David/anybody else?

Am keen on Belle de Jour, Le Mepris and Elephant Man. Am not keen on double dipping my Universal Deer Hunter, it looks fantastic so I am hoping it has not been improved with this new release.

Here is a thread on the Universal release at avsforum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre ... eer&page=2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Screencaps (Universal release):
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/4391 ... ap3tq6.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/1510/d ... ap6lo0.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/8040 ... ap1wm1.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/4295 ... ap2az7.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Would you say the new Studio Canal Deer Hunter is any better than those Universal screencaps?

I am now cursing myself for never reading this thread. I ordered Belle de Jour two days after you posted this, and I have no way to play it.

Purchased a "sample copy... not for sale!" accidentally on ebay of Umbrella's 3 early Polanski films, Noz w wodzie, Repulsion and Cul-de-sac, and found the subtitles terrible, full of gaps, and really simple-minded translations, with none of the nuance of Criterion's. Appears to be a Blue Underground port. Has anyone else experienced same problem on the proper retail version?

And not before time. Ordered.

Is this the first title from the late 60s/70s film revival to be released on Blu-ray?

My copy of Wake in Fright arrived yesterday - the SD version, which is Region 4 PAL. 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer looks pretty good. Packaging is a digipak inside a cardboard slipcase, and this is the first Madman DVD I've seen to contain a booklet as well as the on-disc extras. And it's a proper staple-bound booklet too, with articles on the rediscovery of the film's negative, its restoration and something on the original novel and the film's critical reception at the time of its release.

Viridiana comes with a booklet, but that's the only one I've discovered. Belle et La Bete came with postcards, when I got it. Of scenes from the film.

Sounds like a booklet was more common with Madman's Euro arthouse titles (and at least one Asian title) than with their Australian film titles - which is almost all I get from Region 4.

They're quite common with titles on the Directors Suite label but the recent release of Last Ride also has a booklet featuring a conversation between novelist Denise Young and screenwriter Mac Gudgeon. There's some postcards too. ;)
