Sorry for derailing, but just to confirm, yes -- that's the same bridge, which I know strictly because it's within throwing distance of my apartment! It's the Isabel Holmes Bridge in Wilmington.

Anyone including any Svankmajer on their lists? There hasn't been much mention of his work in this thread, though admittedly, works like Little Otik or Faust, which I'm considering, are borderline horror (yet again).

Saving him for all 50 spots on my animation list.

Little Otik certainly qualifies, although it wouldn't make my list: I'm sure any film with a title Faust must, by definition.
I presume 'Alice' does, also, but I was wondering whether I could somehow justify the inclusion of 'Conspirators of Pleasure'
(even if the title might suggest otherwise)

I'm about out the door for festivities but a couple quick notes: I'm gonna start tallying tomorrow but new lists are still accepted thru 11:59PM EST tomorrow. I think we'll have 100 qualifying films. I also think we'll have the highest participation rate of any genre list yet. And finally, I think I will murder you if you try to resubmit a list with changes/corrections after tonite (IE deadline to change and resubmit your ballot is whenever I wake up and drag my ass home tomorrow morning). Really? Neither Marlowe's (or Mann's) Doctor Faustus nor Goethe's Faust are horror, so it seems like it'd be pretty easy to make a film of the old legend that wasn't a horror film.

It could crack my top 5 or be left off my list completely, depending on how you approach the legend in terms of classification.

A similar problem befalls Phantom Carriage, with me presently leaning towards no.

I think Phantom Carriage falls just slightly into horror though I can't see how Murnau's Faust is in any way considering it is more like a blockbustered Dreyer film.

I toyed with the possibility of including several "deal with the devil" films (also: Sokurov's Faust, The Devil and Daniel Webster) but ultimately decided against them.

You're welcome. The film is actually based on two different stories: Poe's "Pit and the Pendulum" and Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's "A Torture by Hope." They are blended beautifully, and while the film does not feature as much of Svankmajer's animation as most of his shorts, it is for me one of his most haunting and deeply disturbing works.

Lunacy is the closest that Švankmajer came to out-and-out horror, and the only one of his films that he himself describes as a horror film.

But I'd certainly recommend watching The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pendulum, the Pit and Hope and Little Otík too.

I'm sure it was already answered: but can I include Riget and Twin Peaks? I view both as one big film. The Twin Peaks pilot at least was probably first shown in a theatre (Cannes Film Festival)?

I will not include thrillers, but it is often tricky to say what is still a thriller and what is already horror.

If The Phantom Carriage is horror, I suppose we could call Dickens' A Christmas Carol a horror story too. Outside of Death being in the film, I don't see anything about The Phantom Carriage that makes it a horror film. I've never heard the Lagerlof novel or the later Duvivier adaptation referred to as horror fiction & film.

It's the same thing with something like the silent Hunchback of Notre Dame - that gets called a horror film just because it has Lon Chaney in grotesque makeup. If the silent version is, why isn't the 1939 Charles Laughton film a horror film?

In the end Twin Peaks was a miniseries too. It tells one long story, and it has an end. I think it should be included.

Riget wasn't finished too, and while Riget ends after season 2 with a big cliffhanger, the ending of Twin Peaks is a perfect ending (even it could go on from that point, and would have if it had been more successful).

Twin Peaks will not be counted as a miniseries, please do not vote for it.

I'm quite happy to include both the entire 'Histoires Extraordinaires', - although "Toby Dammit" is obviously the best segment -, and 'Dead of Night': I think the story with the painting isn't that far off the Michael Redgrave 'ventriloquist' segment, quality-wise

'Time Out Film Guide' provides listings by category, and 'A Christmas Carol ' isn't included in their Horror category, although they haven't a review of Phantom Carriage in this version (2005)

I was planning to vote for The Forms of Things Unknown but didn't end up finding space for it. It's in good company, tho', as I ended up having to leave off both The Exorcist and Alien as well. Going into this I thought filling up 50 spots would be the hardest part, but it was exactly the opposite: 50 spots went all too quickly and I ended up making some tough choices about what to include.
