There was an Anchor Bay Blu-ray release in the UK at the same time as the two Bronston Anthony Mann films, but I haven’t watched it yet. Having just seen the other film Anchor Bay released on Blu in the UK from this Bronston era, Circus World, auteurists should be thrilled that Ray was fired from that as a result of being fired from this, because my god was that movie awful (Ray still retains a writing credit, if you hate yourself and want to still see it)

Karina Longworth’s You Must Remember This has an excellent episode on Frank Capra’s involvement with this and his really sad post-50’s career

I found the film to be frustratingly sterile in the bulk of its narrative execution, but my god, this must be one of the most wonderfully irreverent plots I've ever seen. Like, it's so good that I recommend the film to everyone, especially going in blind. I was giddy following its absurdism taken to the limits

I can't agree. For better or worse (worse for me), the plot is straight out of Marvel Comics. In fact, this may have been a Captain America storyline, one of the Red Skull's endless and increasingly insane schemes to resurrect the Third Reich.

tbf I used to enjoy this kind of junk as a kid but find it embarrassing and dopey now. The seriousness and intensity Olivier and Gregory Peck bring to this material just makes it feel even more ridiculous to me.

It's definitely up there with Luther's scheme in Donner's Superman, but I guess I just find that kind of gall to lean into ridiculousness with big stars and budgets to be fun when done right

One cartoon I've grown to appreciate more as an adult is Pinky & The Brain - the love they have for Orson Welles helps, but it's all the more charming for how they lean into the absurdity of world domination plots. It did get a little formulaic - eventually, too many episodes revolved around making a ton of money, ostensibly to finance the actual world domination scheme - but overall the plans were ridiculous in a good way: bizarre ideas that couldn't possibly be executed within the laws of physics.

Henry & June is the one that truly needs a 4K. Philippe Rousselot’s photography is astounding.

Trigger Effect is so unconventional and surprising that I can’t help help recommending it, even if it isn’t totally successful

How often have Imprint blu ray releases been followed by a UHD in another region within a year? My fingers are crossed.

The existing Trigger Effect transfer is awful, even taking into account Mill Creek's typical subpar encoding. With Imprint not announcing a new transfer, I'd be very wary.

No idea who owns the rights to Four Moods, but Sons of Good Earth is with Shaw Brothers, which theoretically means that Arrow, VS, or Kani could release it here. They missed adding his first film (The Story of Sue San) to volume 1 though, which should have been available since it's also with Shaw Bros.

I wonder if the 4 hour documentary on King Hu will be added to the second volume. It was on that (very limited) WCL release of A Touch of Zen but I don't think it's been released elsewhere.

I feel similarly to Domino here, hopefully someone in the West will release the missing titles over here. But I’m also very excited to see what Volume 2 contains beyond the obvious films…

And yes very odd Hu’s debut wasn’t included, maybe it doesn’t have an HD scan?
