Great news! Thanks, Nick. Marc Morris at Anchor Bay has said that the UK edition will be superior to the R1 editions. Do you know when the Tartan editions will be released?

No idea. What Jodorowksy are Anchor Bay UK releasing again? (I know they have SANTA SANGRE out).

Anchor UK are not releasing any more Jodorowsky's, Marc Morris was refering to whoever was the UK distributor, but he wouldn't say who that was, though we now know that it is Tartan. I assume that you found out that Tartan were releasing the DVDs through an inside contact, as no info is available anywhere, even on Tartan's website. I would imagine that we won't see the DVDs until 2007.

From Bensons' website: Aspect Ratio : 16:9 Anamorphic Wide Screen
I think it's just an error on Bensons' part. If it is true, one has to give credit to Tartan for being creative

Does anyone know what's going on with these? I can't bring myself to revisit my poor existing copy of
Days of Being Wild, and fancy capitalising on the new-for-old exchange that Tartan suggested a while ago.
Play.com have it listed, but it doesn't look like surfacing any time soon.

It seems that there's finally a date for the Pasolini Box Set (vol. 1), which I read about a looooong time ago..
I'll get this for sure!

I just did a google search about this and found the following on therewindforums.co.uk:
COMING IN SPRING 2007
Three legendary classics from the Master of Visionary Cinema, Alejandro Jodorowsky -Fando & Lis, El Topo and The Holy Mountain.
Info from
here and
here.
Wow! Looks like I might be able to ditch that horrible Raro box (although the book is quite good).

A bit like the one on their site that claims the BFI's Quay Brothers release is "off the schedule" while simultaneously giving it a release date of 30 October 2007?
No idea where they got those from, but both claims are utter rubbish.

This press announcement also lists the titles to be included in
Pasolini boxset 2 in April 2007.

PORCILE! Great! I only hope they will make these films available individually, I don't want to part with that French box set because of all the short films it has in addition.

I'm hearing that Tartan have been bought by Wild Bunch for £10m. I can't confirm that --- can anyone else?

Could be true.... It strikes me that it's relatively little money for Hamish McAlpine who doesn't need it presumably... Maybe he's fed up being hit by his directors...

Tartan has a small, free to enter contest on their website - three box sets to be won: Wong Kar Wai (Days of Being Wild, As Tears Go By, 2046), Park's Vengeance Trilogy, and the Bergman Collection.
On second thought, with that last one, not so small.

I'm reviewing the same set for
Sight & Sound, and am very happy to endorse Noel's comments - it appears to be a marked improvement on previous Tartan Ozu releases. The colours in
Late Autumn are particularly fine.

The colors in all versions of Late Autumn so far seem to be lovely -- as both the Shochiku (Japan) and Panorama (HK) were lovely.
Autumn Afternoon is snake-bit -- the problems described can be found on the Shochiku DVD (and the Panorama) -- so most of the issues are NOT conversion-related. A now out of print French DVD, seemingly based on a completely different sourcem didn't show these problems. I predict Criterion will NEVER release a DVD of this wonderfful Ozu film unless it can find a better source than the one used by Shochiku (which is highly problematic in its first reel or so -- but then considerably more tolerable).

Did anyone else catch this?
The maid's subtle revenge?

Certainly the visitor's revenge, at any rate!
For many years that has been one of my favorite moments in the movie. But I wonder how many people in the English-speaking world would understand it, even if they did notice it?
Strongly suspect that Ozu's films are full of such nuances... most of which we don't notice. Ah, well. Pity all the foreign-language viewers who are forced to grapple with the little cultural nuances in, say, Preston Sturges or Howard Hawks....
