Golden Globe noms

Like others, I don’t care for this award ceremony nor do I accredit it much value, but it’s heartening to see Promising Young Woman featured so prominently, and even more surprisingly within the Drama vs Comedy categories. Not that it isn’t a drama, but for an awards show that seems to default any film with a single laugh into the comedy sectors, it’s admirable to see that they’ve considered its purpose beneath the satire, because the film- in many ways- is most glaringly a (at times very) dark comedy.

The studio decides what category their films compete in, not the Globes, so that’s more a strategic thing from them

Interesting, that makes a whole lot more sense than the Globes suddenly changing their approach, or being worthy of praise

Wouldn't placing Promising Young Woman in Comedy be more beneficial for the studio, since it doesn't have to compete with Chicago 7 and Nomadland and has a much bigger shot at victory? (Though, considering how well it's doing, I wouldn't put it past the Globes to do their own thing and give it Drama Film)

If it actually wins I'll issue my first-ever bouquet for the Globes

Globes, but now that you mention it, both. Unless films like Promising Young Woman, that would never get nominated in a "normal" year, win- in which case I'm down. But the obliviously-uneven Nomadland will probably win everything.

Not to derail the thread, but where did you guys see Nomadland? I've been searching for it since my partner mentioned it a few months ago. And unlike Capernaum, there is nowhere to even purchase it even when renting is unavailable. Pretty Young Woman is another that can only be purchased but not rented/streamed, but at least it is available in some capacity.*

*I do not own a region-free BD player

It played at virtual film festivals (NYFF if I remember correctly), and will be available to stream on Hulu starting on the 19th of this month

I suppose that's a good lead in for the Academy Awards and I can't say I'm surprised about anything. Surely Film Twitter can't be upset about these wins?

Andra Day for best actress seems quite a surprise as the wild card nominee against the other four actresses. This will probably secure her as the fifth for the Oscars (too bad for Zendaya)

Foster was also a surprise, though less so because that category is mostly assumed frontrunners whose movies have kind of run out of steam (Seyfried and Close especially).

The issue with The Mauritanian is that outside of screeners it has only been released theatrically and will only hit streaming on March 2. Awards voters and film critics have made up a sizable proportion of its audience at this point.

The reaction I saw was more a sigh of relief at how the perceived worst nominees (The Prom, Glenn Close, the Sia abomination) were mostly shut out. The biggest gripes were those against Nomadland and Sorkin winning Screenplay

Did I miss some sort of Nomadland controversy? I thought most people, especially the Film Twitter crowd, really liked it.

Anyway, since the nominations, everyone here in Bulgaria has been talking about Maria Bakalova and Borat and it's been very fun looking at all the different, usually ridiculous opinions on her and the film, ranging from calling it an all-time great performance in an all-time great film (though they still haven't seen it) to being disappointed over her getting nominated for Borat, which "isn't cinema". The funniest one is people insisting it's a fantastic performance in a terrible film (whaa?). Her number of best friends obviously grew exponentially, with everyone trying to cash in on the success. Her former drama teacher made some unflattering comments about how Borat isn't art, how he isn't certain in her talent, pretty sexist remarks on how he thinks she got the role, etc., which split opinions even more. Her not winning should tame that a bit, though most people have been acting like she died this morning.
Biggest disappointment is Leslie Odom, Jr. not winning anything. Original song for The Life Ahead is crazy. Love how Daniel Kaluuya almost didn't give an acceptance speech because of mic problems.

I'm not sure why that is funny, but that is how I feel. I wouldn't even call her performance "fantastic", but she is probably the best aspect about an otherwise dull and overdrawn film.

Ha, the reaction I think is weird is when people say they think Borat is awful or tasteless or unfunny but that her performance is great, because her performance is very much in the tone of the film imo. Thinking she is the freshest aspect of a dull, unnecessary sequel is a fair and common opinion, I don't get the people who hate Borat's humor in general, but praise her — it's hard for me to imagine someone who doesn't find Baron Cohen funny finding her performance funny. (It's so common here mostly because of some people feeling obligated to praise her because of some sort of faux-patriotism)

Bafta Nominations.

After last year's issues (to put it mildly) it's good to see several female directors up for best director, and a range of nominees unlikely to be repeated at the Oscars (Rocks, Another Round)
